DailyDirt: How Do You Teach A Computer To Learn Like A Baby?

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

We don't know a whole lot about how our own brains learn or even store/retrieve information, so it seems a bit difficult to expect anyone to build a computer that copies human cognitive functions with any degree of reliability. Still, researchers are trying to build computer models of human brains and brain functions, and if they do figure it out (and learn more about how human intelligence works along the way), we could see some real advances in artificial intelligence. Some of these efforts have been going on for decades, so hopefully, some new angles on machine learning will pan out. If you'd like to read more awesome and interesting stuff, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post via StumbleUpon.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

"How Do You Teach A Computer To Learn Like A Baby?"

    1. Squeeze it out of a hole that isn't quite big enough.

    2. Spank its ass so it cries.

    3. Stuff a wonderful nipple in its face.

    4. After a time remove access to said nipple.

"BabyX is an animated toddler simulation that is designed to mimic the facial expressions and actions of a small child."

Yeah, but is it really a breakthrough in artificial intelligence, or is it the same old technology packaged to look like a baby so that people attribute baby-like cognitive faculties not actually present in the software?

    I can't wait...

...till those 'computers' get to their 'terrible two's'.

I predict an extensive use of 'time outs'.
