DailyDirt: Introduction To Semiconductors

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

Semiconductors are all around us, everyday. They make our phones and computers work, and sometimes we don't realize they're also in our cars and fancy toasters and refrigerators, etc, etc. It's likely that the majority of the Techdirt audience has taken an electrical engineering class, but if you're not in that group (and you're curious about what a semiconductor does), check out these links on what goes into the chips that run the modern world. If you'd like to read more awesome and interesting stuff, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post via StumbleUpon.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    You forgot Britney Spears

You forgot the essential website, "Britney Spears' Guide to
    Semiconductor Physics".

    Here's a challenge for everybody.

How many chip manufacturers can you name? Fabless companies does not count!

Okay, here are some answers in the form of an incomplete table of fabs...

    https://www.coursera.org/course/comparch

There's a free course on microprocessor architecture at the link.

But you have to hurry to register, I'm not sure if they'll leave the materials available after the final course exam.
