EU ACTA Negotiator Removed From Negotiations [Updated]
from the what's-it-mean dept
Not much in the way of details, but a week after EU negotiators briefed the EU Parliament on ACTA, the head EU negotiator, Luc Devigne, is apparently out of that role. There's some speculation that perhaps (hopefully?) this means that the European Commission is finally losing its enthusiasm for ACTA, due to the growing opposition around the globe. Considering that the key debate points are between the US and the EU, it'll be interesting to see what this shakeup means for the next round of negotiations (to take place next month in DC). Update: Jamie Love is now clarifying his original report, saying he received a phone call saying that while Devigne has taken a new job, he'll continue negotiating ACTA for the time being.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Which is really saying something when the US does look pretty heavy handed with the criminal intentions.
