DailyDirt: Keep Your Head On...

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

Some surgeries that were really risky just a couple decades ago are nearly routine now -- though the risk of death and/or complications is always going to exist. However, the idea of a head transplant is more than a little "out there" when it comes to extreme medical procedures. There are some people working on transplanting heads (or switching bodies, depending on your point of view), but early adopters aren't expected to get any life extension benefits just yet. After you've finished checking out those links, take a look at our Techdirt Deals for cool gadgets and other awesome stuff.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Head transplants are still a bit out there, but 3D-printed skull replacements are real technology today.

I can see a head transplant being used to save someone who has severe damage to their body, but also if they can successfully transplant a head, it should mean that they would also be able to reconnect severed spinal cords in a person's original body.

    Re:

"out there" is an understatement, until medical science provides reliable and safe treatment and repair of spinal cord injury and nerve tissue, "head transplants" are a macabre fantasy.

..."transplanting heads (or switching bodies, depending on your point of view)"

I'd just like to point out that only one element of this equation is capable of achieving a 'point of view'...
