DailyDirt: The Quest For The Perfect Sugar Substitute

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

There's nothing like the taste of real sugar, but since people want to be able to indulge in sweet things without having to worry about the calories, there's a huge market for sugar substitutes. There's no shortage of choices -- stevia, aspartame, sucralose, sorbitol, acesulfame potassium, saccharin, etc. -- some are natural, while others are artificial. However, sugar substitutes tend to leave a weird aftertaste, or they may have undesirable gastrointestinal side effects. There is also some concern that artificial sweeteners may pose health risks. Since no sugar substitute is perfect, the search continues... Here are a few interesting links about sugar alternatives. If you'd like to read more awesome and interesting stuff, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Re:

I tried Truvia, which is made from Stevia, once. Straight out of the packet, it tasted a little bit like licorice and was sweet, but I put about 8-10 packets in a half-gallon of Kool-Aid and couldn't taste it at all. Plus, it was much more expensive than other artificial sweetners.

I use "Stevia in the Raw" for my substitute(I'm a diabetic) and for a half-gallon of fresh tea, I use 18 packets(~3/4 cup sugar equiv.)
