DailyDirt: Are You Sure You're Eating What You Think You're Eating?

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

It seems like every day there's another report of problems with our food -- E. Coli in beef and packaged salads, Salmonella in canteloupe, Listeria in packaged sliced apples, etc. Worries about bacterial contamination in food is pretty common, but it seems like we should also be worrying about whether the food we're eating is really what we think it is. Recently, there was the scandal in the UK over beef products that contained horsemeat. But thanks to modern day technology, scientists are now able to test food products and determine whether they are indeed what they claim to be. Here are just a few examples.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    DNA detection is too sensitive?

It only takes a little bit of DNA to freak people out. That's probably why they don't test for human DNA. Protein is protein...

Imagine how much insect DNA is in the food you eat.

Tuna caught near California still have traces of Fukushima radiation

Tell me again, why is there are agencies called the FDA, and USDA both run by a bunch of oath breaking foreign agenda scum who could care less about anyone's health?

Mostly I know what I am eating, I actually produce part of what I eat.

The potatoes, cucumbers, onions, carrots, tomatoes, peas I know exactly what they are and how they were raised.

Are you suggesting the elimination of said governmental agencies or that they need to do their jobs in a more professional manner? I would agree with the latter, the former is crazy talk.
