DailyDirt: 3D Printing Doesn't Require Dorky Glasses

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

Every so often, there's a catchy gadget label that tries to make things sound cooler than they are. For example, I've actually seen sunglasses that advertised that they provided "HD vision" -- even though they were non-prescription. The "HD" fad may be dying down, but the "3D" train might just be boarding. The development of 3D printing technology, though, is legitimately cool. Here are just a few examples.
  • Growing certain simple human organs from scratch is possible, and more complex organs are on the way. "I just do eyes, ju-, ju-, just eyes... just genetic design, just eyes. You Nexus, huh? I design your eyes." [url]
  • A 3D-printed flute took 15 hours to print -- with some assembly required. Maybe musical instruments will get a lot cheaper -- and encourage more kids to play them (interactively with video games, perhaps?). [url]
  • Printed food could be made from soylent green ink. Actually, it's not people, but it could be -- if it were combined with the human organ printing project. [url]

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

This post is probably going to get some visits by raelien's. They are heavy into the whole printing up new bodies and mind uploading thing.

By the way great blade runner quote.

Nice. I love this 3D printer from guys in Ireland - prints 3D on paper so much cheaper to operate: http://www.mcortechnologies.com/
