DailyDirt: Living The Dream...

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

Living in northern California has plenty of benefits -- nice weather, plenty of cool stuff to do, tons of companies to work for, etc, etc. One of the downsides is housing. Crazy expensive rental properties are pretty much normal, but a few people have come up with some alternative solutions. If you don't mind living in small spaces or commuting long distances, you can save up quite a bit. After you've finished checking out those links, take a look at our Daily Deals for cool gadgets and other awesome stuff.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    I wonder who...

will be the first "Containertopian" to make a wrong turn and end up in a container at the port of Oakland.

State income tax doesn't work that way

Sure, there's no state income tax in Nevada, but that means you pay your California income tax to California.

Give the Hyperloop team a few years to set things up, and you'll most likely know a lot more people who do that. The commute time will be on par with the plane ride, but at a fraction of the cost.

    Evidently not in California.

Years ago I helped a friend who had moved from California with their tax forms. California's forms did NOT exorcise the income earned outside of California, so my friend had to pay California income tax on all their income, not just what was earned in California.
