DailyDirt: Not Enough Flies In My Soup, Waiter...

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

It's actually somewhat difficult to avoid eating insects accidentally. Bugs (or bug parts) get into our food supply all the time, and it's not really a bad thing (unless you're a strict vegan). Some folks, though, want more insects in their food, and not just fried grasshoppers or exotic scorpions. Insect protein could be a more sustainable food source, and arguably, our distant primate relatives eat far more insects than meat from other animals like we do. Here are just a few interesting links on insects in our food. If you'd like to read more awesome and interesting stuff, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post via StumbleUpon.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

  1. Come on!

Starbucks had to switch to a vegetable-based dye because people were either grossed out or vegan.

That's like saying "Adobe Flash was working perfectly on YouTube, but Google switched to WebM because people were either running low-spec hardware or Stallmanite freetards".

Err, I was going to say...

Riiiight! Like you don't drink/eat/breathe in thousand of bugs every day anyways, eh?

    "was"?

No past-tense about it: Carmine (the coloring created from ground up cochineal bugs), even if Starbucks isn't using it, is still used in A LOT of food and cosmetic products, and many considered it safer/healthier than alternatives like Red #40.

It's funny where people draw the arbitrary lines for "disgusting". Bugs are gross, but chemicals and preservatives are not. Eating horse is inhumane, eating cow is not.

Personally, I don't actually care that much about what I'm eating, as long as it's safe and sanitary and I like the taste.

I can eat bugs, hell when I was in Korea they had these bug roasts on every corner it seemed, they were good but I still like Bulgogi.

Pigs are another food animal that, while fairly intelligent, is still commonly eaten.

    And don't forget snake wine!

Most true insects are delicious if they're prepared right. Fried ants are peppery.

    Waiter!

Waiter, I said I wanted the stir fly, NOT the stir fry! :-)
