DailyDirt: Now You're Cooking With Gas... Or Something Better Maybe?
from the urls-we-dig-up dept
There are all kinds of kitchen gadgets that promise to save time while cooking meals. The microwave oven is probably the best example of technology making our meals significantly faster to prepare, but there are plenty of other cooking methods that are catching on in more and more kitchens (induction cooking, slow cookers, etc). Here are just a few more examples that might clutter your countertops.- The next ubiquitous cooking gadget could be a thermal immersion circulator for "set it and forget it" sous vide cooking. Cooking food in plastic bags is not quite as convenient as microwaving stuff, but it's not that hard -- and your kitchen never smells like burnt popcorn after you use one of these. [url]
- You might remember: Ron Popeil presented his Ronco Showtime Rotisserie & BBQ in an infomercial that aired for the first time on August 8, 1998. Total sales for the Ronco Showtime Rotisserie exceed a billion dollars -- far surpassing similar cooking devices like the Roto-Broil 400 from the 1950s. [url]
- The Wonderbag is a twist on a slow cooker -- and it uses no electricity. Okay, you might need to use some electricity (or gas or something) in order to heat up the food, but once your food has been heated to boiling -- put it in this somewhat unwieldy beanbag and just wait for a few hours while your food slowly cooks. Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Re: popcorn!
maybe if you used your immersion circulator with hot oil.... not so sure about using a vacuum-sealed bag, tho.

Let's see...
Or an increase of roughly one tenth of ALL plastics production world wide. An increase of 10% of waste product.
The sooner this sous-vide trend can die, the better.
