DailyDirt: I Would Never Tell A Lie...

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

Wonder woman had a lasso that forced bad guys to tell the truth -- which always seemed a bit ridiculous. But forcing people to tell the truth is an interesting area of research, and folks have made some progress over the years. Here are just a few quick links on some projects about lying. By the way, StumbleUpon can recommend some good Techdirt articles, too.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Putting terrorists' heads in a magnetic field seems a bit more friendly than waterboarding, though..

Not if you have experienced high intensity magnetic fields.

only if your head is magnetic. Deplete your self of magnetically reactive elements and you can lie till the cows come home.

    sounds familiar

"One [problem] is how to discover, against his will, what another human being is thinking... In so far as scientific research still continues, this is its subject matter. The scientist of today is... a mixture of psychologist and inquisitor, studying with real ordinary minuteness the meaning of facial expressions, gestures, and tones of voice, and testing the truth-producing effects of drugs, shock therapy, hypnosis, and physical torture..."

    Tinfoil Hat Fashion Copyrights

Aha! Here is a looming opportunity for the fashion industry. Of course there is a lot of (really bad) precedent out there, so 'Tinfoil Hat Fashion Copyrights' might run into prior 'art', or obviousness issues.

No matter. The lawyers will win either way.

No chance of that getting off the ground. They'd just have the police start kicking the snot out of everyone who wears a tinfoil hat.
I mean, they already dish out random beatings for public waltzing and open WiFi, why not tinfoil hats too?

Time to set them up in all government buildings.

They should just have asked Hollywood about how to make a working truth serum.

Unfortunately, it's likely that politicians are able to brainwash themselves into actually believing all the things they say....
