Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I know you are exploring ways to generate revenue, but so far, the majority of products "featured" have been crap.
I feel this really cheapens the experience here, and it bothers me every time I see it. It colors my view of the site overall in a negative way.
I hope you will reconsider continuing.

Re:
Techdirt users are smart. Well, most of them, anyway (ahem antidirt ahem). I'm sure they can do their research like I did.
That being said, it might be nice to see a few deals that I actually would want. Even if they are modest discounts.

Re: Re:
If the implication here is that Techdirt users (being smart people) won't take advantage of the crappy deals,
> We earn a portion of all sales from Techdirt Deals.
then I guess Techdirt should invest more time into getting non-crappy deals since the crappy ones don't generate any commissioned sales.
I don't think they will change because I think the reality of the matter is they do generated commissioned sales on the crappy, unsafe deals thanks to their "not smart" users.
It's either a bad business decision (wasted investments in deals people aren't taking advantage of) or unethical (setting up the shadiest deals they are offered as advertisements to take advantage of unwise people.)

You've heard of the proverbial 10-foot pole?
You know what they say: Don't touch this with a 'ten-foot-pole'. If you want a 'real' VPN solution, this site has one of the best comparisons of what's available, who's tracking your info, and what it costs; it's a year old, but still valid:

Re: Products have been crap
So far, I still can't get phone calls from my driveway up to my unit. My phone doesn't even ring. I put that in SPRINT's lap but Freedom Pop can't do much to fix it.
If I could change carriers to Cricket and get AT&T's network instead of SPRINT, I'd do it.
But I won't ever by another product through TechDirt again. I hope the find another model.

Re: Disreputable VPN company
When the majority of TechDirt readers are techies and probably use MacOS or even Linux, why offer a shady company that only supports a Windows product.
Yes, they support Android, but I'll bet it was contract for hire and is also doubtful.
Thanks for researching their 'happy customers'. Half off crap is still crap.
Mike, please consider another revenue model.

Gretchen Heckmann should be fired for endangering TD readers. Ad's like this define TD as a corporate parasite with absolutely no consern for their readers safety/security.
They have TLS 1.0 on their sites ssl. they don't even know how to do website security. People are suposed to trust them with packet transfer?
No one should buy this pyrimid scheam, unsustanable, proprietary, LOGGING, BS "service".
