a worthy service provider should offer:
1. Zero customer knowledge policy/procedure integrated throughout the entire business model. If they're serious about privacy protection, then they recognise ALL customer data is a liability.
2. Intelligent compartmentalization/segregation of business operations into multiple entities in multiple territories/jurisdictions. Only one-way crypto-hashes should be able to bridge these gaps.
3. All owned hardware- no leased VM infrastructure used in anything security critical. -doesn't matter what they promise if they're not in full control of the hardware.
4. Fully open source with all server and client-side software disclosed and configs posted. -anything less is a black box... look for minimal footprint, grc hardened kernal, modified/eliminated radius service...etc. "no logs" is easier said then done- it's simply not possible with standard setups.
5. Openvpn only; no option for PPTP- it's long known to be completely worthless, anyone offering it doesn't know or care what they're doing.
6. Owned, blockchain verified, DNScrypt secured DNS servers, with client-side leak protection.
7. Active forum cataloguing relative security/privacy issues, diagnostics, and countermeasures.
8. Active security/dev team which follows relevant news and works to protect network members from compromise. There are many known ways to compromise vpns- like the stun protocol, for a common example- if the service provider isn't actively working to find and defeat methods such as this, using the service can cause more harm then good.
