Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Techdirt's Memory Hole?

Hey, what's going on here? All the recent "Daily Deal" posts by Gretchen Heckmann and Leigh Beadon (including yesterday's) have just had their names scrubbed off the site. Is it OK to wonder why they have suddenly become non-persons?

It's been a common, reoccurring theme of Techdirt to point out the ridiculousness in the Internet Age of trying to retroactively rewrite history and not expect anyone to notice. So it's kind of ironic to see a site that regularly mocks others that engage in that practice (and rightly so!) having a kind of "Memory Hole" of its own.

But back to the topic. Would this device, by mounting a smartphone on a car's windshield, be a violation of 49 CFR 393.88?

    § 393.88 Television receivers.

Any motor vehicle equipped with a television viewer, screen or other means of visually receiving a television broadcast shall have the viewer or screen located in the motor vehicle at a point to the rear of the back of the driver's seat if such viewer or screen is in the same compartment as the driver and the viewer or screen shall be so located as not to be visible to the driver, while he/she is driving the motor vehicle. The operating controls for the television receiver shall be so located that the driver cannot operate them without leaving the driver's seat.

    Re: Techdirt's Memory Hole?

I'm not sure what you mean. All daily deal posts have been under the "Daily Deal" byline since almost the very beginning. There were a few at the beginning, well over a year ago, that had mine or Gretchen's byline on them simply because we were using our editor accounts to put the posts into the system and schedule it - but since we weren't actually writing them and don't really have much to do with them, we realized that made no sense and quickly changed them all to the new "Daily Deal" byline. It's been that way ever since, AFAIK.
