Real Networks Buys Xing
from the branching-out dept
Real Networks today announced that they've bought Xing who makes MP3 encoding software. Xing's software is extremely popular, and this was a surprise to me. I think this move has more bite to it and the announcement yesterday with IBM. That was PR value, this shows they're doing something. Now let's see what they do with Xing.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Re: Step 1: Stomp out MP3
I agree that currently, Real's main focus is on "non-storable" media, but I think this move is:
1. To hedge their bets as to the future direction of Internet media.
2. Position themselves better to address a new form of e-commerce.
Maybe there will be two Internet media standards in the future - one for capture and one for plain listening/viewing. Sort of like like VHS and BetaMax - the question is: which format will be which?
