CompUSA Feeling the Heat

from the another-one-bites-the-dust dept

CompUSA, which has definitely been struggling with this whole 'net thing, is making changes to try to position themselves better. It seems to me, though, that these are merely reactionary moves based on the fact that fewer and fewer people have reason to go to a CompUSA anymore, and so they're trying to cut costs, and not necessarily drive more business, really change their business, or do anything that fits with these Internet times. Maybe they have more in store, but this is just pulling the rug over some little mess...

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Hmm, this does seem like a Band-Aid...

As I see it, CompUSA's problems are that they don't really carry a variety of hardware, their employees are largely useless non-technical shelf-stockers, and THEIR PRICES SUCK.

I mean, I paid 10 bucks the last time I was in there for a stupid Y-cable to split a power connecter inside a PC. This is a 25-cent piece of hardware! I would have walked out in disgust, but it was Sunday afternoon and nowhere else was open.

Of course, this is only a variation on "Why I never go to the mall anymore." Because practically every store in the mall is the same way: high prices, poor selection, and the employees don't know anything and aren't going to be there in a year. I either go to an independantly owned specialty store with knowledgeable sales staff, or I order through the mail over the net.

In ten years, I'm picturing empty malls with tumbleweeds and cattle wandering through them...
