Captive Internet Audiences... in the Elevator

from the stretching-it dept

A new startup apparently has decided that elevators are a good place to hit people with internet advertising. There are a million problems with this idea in my mind, but it brings up the issue that recently it seems people are trying to find anything that people look at and place ads on them. Interesting strategy, but what's the return?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    What price sanctitiy?

So the next innovation in advertising is this:

    FAKEPRESSRELEASE: ComEd to introduce discount.

Starting tomorrow, ComEd will give a discount on electricity to customers who allow ComEd to install electronic billboards in their bedrooms, kitchen and bathrooms.

John Bolt, of ComEd said advertisers love the program, "We've got Dominos and Pizza Hut fighting eachother to own the refrigerator door. It's great!" Certain restrictions apply to the deal, such as guaranteed use of the rooms in which billboards are installed. Said Bolt, "We have to be sure they are looking at the signs, so the next step is sure to be web cams into their homes, you know, for monitoring purposes only."

The special promotion is expected to last indefinitely.

But you need more captive audiences. :) So, bathroom walls are probably very valuable. Ceiling space above beds... Kitchen table maybe? Areas near a non-cordless telephone?

How about in cars? On the backs of each seat for passengers in the backseats and on the front of the glove compartment for passengers.
