Compaq Suing eMachines

from the lawsuits! dept

Ah, more lawsuits. Now Compaq is suing eMachines. Details from the article are severely lacking, but I'll update this as anything comes to light. Updated: News.com has a has a few more details on the lawsuit. It's still not clear exactly what the issue is that they're suing about.

    No Subject Given

Compaq has a broad set of patents for PCs that we take for granted, but supposedly they get some residual licensing from, like (as CNET reports): reset buttons on machines, the reset function of PCs (warm boot), passwords on startup. Most of these stem from their early days of challenging the IBM standard. CNET mentions the PB suit that CPQ filed, but that, if memory serves, was over a very different set of issues -- it was a slap suit over selling re-furbished computers as new. I didn't think that there was any "settling" to be done in that case between PB and CPQ, BUT the suit might have also covered patent protection on the above-mentioned compaq innovations.
