We know who you are: Valueline's lawsuit gets name

from the how-anonymous-are-you dept

Benjamin Schachter writes "The President and CEO of Valueline (The company you see hawking a giant three-ring binder filled with stock charts---all of which can be had for free on the Internet) is sueing many of the people posting disparaging (and she claims slanderous) messages on Yahoo message boards. She has been granted the legal right to obtain from Yahoo and AOL, the real names and addresses of these people, many of who are former employees of value line. It is a very sad and funny story and just goes to show that you must be careful about your postings. You are not protected just because you have an alias." Hmmm... it's not totally clear from the article what's going on here, but I never thought you had to give any real info when you get a Yahoo! alias, so I'm not sure it really means anything.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
