Hotmail Security Breach

from the and-excellent-customer-service dept

Dan Miller writes "Ok, this is absurd. It seems that anyone with a Hotmail account had their accounts cracked wide open with a few lines of HTML code. When CNN contacted Microsoft, they were referred to Corporate Security, who recommended sending a note to abuse@hotmail.com. That's just great."

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Typical Microsoft

Notice how none of this happened until Microsoft tried to deploy their "M$N Passport" service onto Hotmail. Microsoft could turn a marshmallow into a dangerous weapon.

Still happening, my email was breached on June 7th, email send to all of ouremail friends asking for 1,000 pounds because we were stranded in the London aiport. We got the same shuffle fro MSN security and no action or real reply. Only a computer generated email thanking us. Sad.

Fraudulent Email sent out of my account asking for money

Please advice me on what to do concerning this issue. A good friend of mine received an email from me asking for $2400 to wire to London. I did not sent the email nor i am in London. She called me this morning. I worked for the U.S. Navy and is at work right now and unable to access my hotmail account from work.

You can respond to me and send it to my navy account carlota.scroggs@navy.mil

My work phone is 757-462-8935. I did not know what to do so I called and reported this to the FBI office in Elizabeth City, NC and called my nmci office on the base that I worked. She was the one who advised me to contact you at hotmail security.
