Reverse Bidding for Your College Education

from the changing-world-of-education dept

Well, it seems that someone has decided to take the Priceline reverse auction model to college. That's right, this guy is hoping that colleges will sign up and be able to accept "bids" from perspective students as to how much they're willing to pay for 4 years of top grade education. To me this concept has a way too many problems to even get started, but I wouldn't be surprised if the lawyers from Priceline put a stop to it all before any of those issues really matter.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    No Subject Given

Haven't read the article, but I would have thought that the better model would be the reverse: You submit your credentials, essays, etc. to a central auction administrator (ETS?..), and schools bid on you as a prospective student. The educational market is incredibly competitive (where it isn't state subsidized or alumni-subsidized), so for thousands of smaller schools, this model would offer a way to "buy" the students you might not otherwise attract.

Actually, I agree, that's not a bad idea... That makes a lot of sense. The name your own price thing, doesn't really make much sense at all. Of course, from a student's perspective, they probably like the name your own price idea, and I'd bet it was a student who came up with the idea.
