Barnesandnoble.com Buys Books.com

from the short-domains-are-good dept

I'm surprised this didn't make more news, but Barnesandnoble.com bought Books.com mainly for the domain name yesterday. Books.com was the failed attempt by Cendant to take on Amazon.com.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Books.com is the oldest bookstore on the net

I bought books from books.com in late '93 when they still called themselves Bookstacks and had a telnet interface. AFAIK it is the oldest bookstore on the net. They had great service too, and a, for that time, incredible selection. It's really sad that they got bought again.

What a pity this shop has changed hands again. I have lots and lots of books from 1800-1900 lots are first editions, and are in fair to good condition. I have to now rid myself of these books as I have other intrests in my life. Anybody know where I may do this. I live in Faro Portugal and my mobile number is as follows 00351 918 539 385. If anyone can help me plese call, many thanks
