Hoiley.com is the worlds first WAP Community

from the going-wireless dept

Hans writes "The website Hoiley.com, created by German startup ManAndMedia.com, is the world's first WAP Community. In a style like Geocities, users can come to sign up and create a free WAP Page. An easy to use WAPbuilder makes it possible to run your own WML Page within a few minutes without any knowledge of WML. Hoiley.com goes live in January 2000. WAP stands for (W)ireless(A)pplication(P)rotocoll and makes it possible to access websites on any WAP ready mobile phone. Additionally Users can get a free YourName@hoiley.com Email, which is ofcourse also accessable from any WAP mobile." This post goes against my direct advertising for a site rules, but I think it's interesting. I wonder if we really need a Geocities for mobile devices? Of course, at the time of posting, I can't actually get to the website to check it out.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Hmm... there's some potential

I checked out hoiley.com, it doesn't seem like a bad idea (in fact it reminds me a lot of a wireless version of geocities) but first they have to get the site up and running before their competition (that's going to be the hard part).
