You may use logical threats/arguments to avoid being required to do this.
You could try stating the following to avoid giving it up (the password/key you perv):
Your attempts to force me to give you my password/encryption key violates my 4th amendment rights. If I have anything incriminating on the machine then it also violates my 5th amendment rights against self-incrimination. Are there any more of my constitutional rights you want to violate today? I am sure my lawyer would love to add those to the list of items during the trial against you and your superiors.
So your quoting actions that happened in the British colonies almost a full 100 years before the American Revolutionary War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Revolutionary_War).
The laws are quite a bit different now. Anything they can get away with doing, legal or not, are not things that are sufficient for me to give into these assholes.
I don't care what they threaten me with. Even if I only have pictures of cute little kittens on my computer. There is no way in hell that I would give them access to the data on my computer. I would resist simply on principle, but also because I believe it a violation of my rights. If I have to go to jail for what I believe in then so be it.
If we don't stand up for our rights then no one else will either.
Mike definitely deserves some major kudos and accolades for his vigilant fight against these bills. He used his position to spread information and awareness and for that we should be forever grateful.
I inherently distrust any law that quickly cites "protecting children". That is a very strong indication that something nasty is trying to slip through. Hell I wouldn't put it past them to create a "protect the children" bill that actually encourages the violation of children.
We just can't trust our government anymore. Too much corruption. Too much greed. Too much ignorance and stupidity.
Amen to that brother. We can't become complacent now. We have to make sure that Washington knows to never do this again. The fight isn't over until the beast is broken and dead.
I would rather shut them up permanently. They go too far and are obviously too slow to adapt to ever listen to. The only reason the industry has survived for so long in its current form is that up until recently people really didn't have much of a choice in sources of video and music entertainment.
I won't consider it over until these bills aren't just shelved but abandoned entirely. I am concerned that the people behind them will just wait until the fervor against them has died down and then just reintroduce them under the same or a different name.
Mike, normally I support your journalism but in this case I gotta say your being an idiot yourself. If you look at the number of democrats that dropped support of the bill including the president himself I think that support is dropping strongly there too.
Don't get me wrong, love a chance to kick either party in the balls when they play games and make BS moves. But at least lets be honest about what is really going on.
Our Government/Entertainment Industry must be stopped!!!
Looks like the government is at it again. Megaupload is just like YouTube or PhotoBucket. It allows users to upload whatever they want. But like YouTube and PhotoBucket they also have DMCA takedown procedures. Legally they should be covered by the SafeHarbor provisions for service providers as long as they comply with DMCA takedown procedures.
This is just ridiculous. You know the entertainment industry would have done this to YouTube already had it not been for the fact that a gigantic corporation with the power to fight back owns it. There was a complete violation of due process in this case.
Not only that but they are having foreign governments arrest their own citizens for breaking AMERICAN laws. This is a complete overreach of government powers. But then maybe our government thinks that protections only apply to US citizens.
Who has the copyright on the word "infringement"? If no one does then I totally want to get it so that I can then sue any industry or politician idiots whom invoke it.
So does this say you talk too much? Or maybe you have a lot to talk about. Personally I like to read your posts. Congrats on the milestone. Maybe you should throw a party when you hit 50k.
By the way have you contacted the Guiness Book people about this?
I will tell you this right now, I do not support the actions of Congress and if we have to march right up there and drag them out of office kicking and screaming and put them on trial for their crimes against this country then I am all for it. There is no excuse for any of this BS that they have been putting on us for the last 10 to 20 years.
They keep getting worse and worse. They, along with the executive and judicial branches, keep violating our Constitutional rights. They are violating humanitarian protocol that our country helped put together almost half a century ago. They are breaking with the Geneva Conventions.
Who the hell do they think they are? This is insane. I am all for stopping terrorists, but these actions don't stop terrorists. These actions turn our other police and military forces into government sponsored terrorists.
I am voting all incumbents out of office in this next round of elections. We need representatives that actually believe in the rights of citizens.
We also need a bill that requires ALL government legislation, ALL treaties, and ALL executive agreements, from beginning (prep work and negotiations) to end be fully open to the public and documented (video and audio of everything) on the internet for the world to see.
As far as I am concerned any bills that are not created fully in the open should be automatically become null and void. They are worthless and illegal and harmful to everyone. They are a threat to the stability, security, and wealth of this nation.
I agree, I think I would rather learn to play an instrument and create my own content around a camp fire than pay for all this crap that keeps coming out of Hollywood. Part of the reason people are resisting so much is because the deluge of crap that has come from the entertainment industry for decades.
Yeah there are a few good songs and movies here and there, but the vast majority is not worth the plastic its printed on and no one wants to pay album price for one or two decent songs.
If the industry wants to stop piracy it has got to fulfill the wishes of their consumers. That means FAIR pricing. That means available through the mediums the customer chooses. That means quality over quantity.
So far none of these things have been met by the industry and only some of those have been met by new offerings (though Pandora, Netflix, and Spotify come dang close to hitting all those marks).
I believe that many people would be able to justify a huge lawsuit for loss of revenues and other things against the DOJ, Congress, and the Entertainment Industry. I would love to see that go to trial.
Hell, it could even be an international trial for that since so many other countries would be effected.
