If Megan was your kid, would you still feel ok with what Lori Drew did?
if megan was my daughter she would have been raised from birth to know that anyone online that you haven't met in real life is either a fed, a corporate shill, a stalker, a criminal or a bot.
while wpa2 uses AES crypto (256bit i believe, same as the military uses for classified documents) it's still a password challenge, and is therefore vulnerable to brute force attacks.
there are other attacks as well, such as fake AP/evil twin attacks, where you impersonate the AP to gather credentials or serve as a man in the middle.
a friend of mine mentioned just last night how conficker has supposedly affected computers that number in the millions (the storm and kraken botnets numbered in the hundreds of thousands), yet it hasn't done much but send some spam.
my theory is that it is a "for hire" botnet, and just hasn't gotten much business yet.
he also noted how researchers have been impressed with it's command and control system and it's ability to propagate and evade detection in spite of the fact that MS has produced a fix for it.
his conspiracy theory is that conficker is the product of some US government/military thinktank for use as some sort of attack fleet. he suspects the NSA or DARPA.
it has all of the ingredients of your classic conspiracy theory (unanswered questions, blaming the usual suspects, etc.) but you have to wonder if there isn't some truth to it.
Don't forget that pirates talk with an awesome accent, wear eyepatches, have peg legs, use hooks for hands. Most importantly they violently take ships, usually kill all of the sailors, and then take everything they want. Alternatively they don't kill, but just hold the ship ransom for several million dollars.
don't forget the sword fights. sword fighting is why i download movies and music. sword fighting is good exercise and it relieves stress. i can't really start my day until i have had some coffee, stolen thousands of dollars in movies and music, and had a good sword fight.
a politician is grandstanding to get elected? shocker.

i watch a lot of british tv (well a lot for an american living in the states anyway) but because it's not on here in the states i end up downloading most of it from the internet.
the brits make some great TV shows, like "the IT crowd", "being human", and "spaced". there has to be a market for these shows outside of britain.
I guess that pirate now stands for someone who is vocal and active in supporting what they believe, be it free music downloads, convenient gaming, or privacy.
no, pirate means anyone who denies a corporation the profits it believes it is entitled to, regardless of the direction the market has moved in.
if you download movies, music or software, those industries believe that those downloads are all lost sales, and that they have been denied profits on those sales. that is the corporate definition of music/movie/software piracy.
phorm believes that information about your browsing habits belongs to them, and that advocating for your privacy is denying them profits. that is the definition of privacy piracy.
this opens a new door of orwellian newspeak possibilities:
if you use a cell phone instead of buying a land line telephone, you are a phone pirate.
if you watch hulu instead of subscribing to basic cable, you are a TV pirate.
if you read news online instead of buying papers, you are a news pirate.
if you advocate for electric cars, you are a fuel pirate.
You can't even track it, especially if people spoof the IP's and make them all point to the IFPI.
that's not entirely true. you can see the IP's of the people who are uploading/downloading to, unless they are taking measures to prevent tracking, such as proxies, tunnels, or block lists.
it's not hard to thwart 98% of the tracking that is being done, but simply using bit torrent doesn't automatically shield you from tracking because anonymity is not built in to BT.
in the old warez days games had elaborate custom intros done by the teams that released them. in time, people quit caring about the games and just traded the demos.
maybe a 30-60 custom intro will bring back american interest in demos.
yet I still pay $1300 a year in property taxes to the Water District on top of my $100 a month water bill to the Water District. Shouldn't my water rates make the district profitable?
$209 per month for water? do you live on the moon?
The incumbent providers indeed have enjoyed government subsidies of one form or another over the years. How is it going to promote innovation to create a new company to "compete" with them that 1) does not have to make a profit and 2) is wholly government subsidized? What motivation does Greenlight (the city-owned broadband provider) have to innovate at all?
and just how is a for profit competitor going to enter the market with no subsidies or rights of way?
the incumbents are monopolies that are crying about munis having advantages that are even more unfair than the ones that the incumbents are currently enjoying.
a better question in all of this would be who is going to build the network? where are the backhaul lines going to come from? my guess is that the incumbents could bid on the contracts and maybe make some money before the competition starts.
Perhaps the studio would have done better to offer, say, a large bonus (say 10k per person on staff) for keeping screener copies out of reach of those without a "need to know" and also employ whatever secrecy concepts/tools, say, Lucas employs.
the work print for "attack of the clones" film was leaked as well.
What I don't get is TechDirt's hang up with royalties - this bizarre attitude that you do the work once, you get paid once. Sorry folks, I'm not a fucking bricklayer.
i totally agree. i can't get high and embarrass myself in the tabloids if i am working every day. i can't be expected to work like regular people. i also need more money than regular people because alimony, heroin, and rehab don't pay for themselves, so i need to make more while doing less.
it really hurt when i compromised my artistic integrity to make pop tunes, so i deserve compensation, a lot of it.
yeah, when has a cable company ever lowered it's prices? you honestly believe that you would pay less? i have no idea where you are or who your cable provider is, and i am confident that there has never been a permanent reduction in subscription prices there.
the price might drop temporarily, but before long, you will be paying what you pay now plus overage fees if you go over your cap.
