Re: Re: Re: Using Inflammatory Words Like Nazi Cheapens the Mess
If it looks like a Nazi, goose-steps like a Nazi, and sieg heils like a Nazi, maybe it's promoting traditional family values and self-sufficiency, amirite?
So maybe don't worry about sides and just moderate. Rick Wilson is conservative, smart and funny and yet to be banned. Why? He's not a hate-filled loon, he's just a bit naughty and fond of profanity.
Twitter won't ban him and I don't think they should. Actually, I've never seen Rick freak out about right wing nutjobs being booted off social media for promoting hate. I think that's why I like him.
Many are either actively advocating for Dem candidates or have joined the party.
I've got some respect for David French of the National Review, though he's often blinded by ideological positions he never questions.
Meanwhile, Bruce Bartlett has gone way too far to the Progressive left for my taste but I still have a great deal of respect for him. Basically, I rate anyone who's somewhere in the middle of those two.
We need to reclaim conservatism from the loons and start thinking about what it really means, not what it means now. We used to be the adults in the room. The designated drives. A bit nannyish but a safe pair of hands. Now... don't get me started!
That's nice of them but unfortunately judges don't pay attention to celebrity endorsements even when they're perfectly reasonable, and in my opinion, correct in this case.
Agreed, but not all videos displaying violence are displaying real-world violence. If someone shares a clip from a film they found on YouTube, what then?
It's not as cut-and-dried as that, as recent events are proving. Any authoritarian will find a way to "make" the Constitution say what it wants. If you were right we wouldn't have a surveillance state and constant attacks on women's rights to self-determination whether they are pregnant or not.
I get what you're saying about saboteurs, etc. I agree that more, better speech isn't the answer when there's not enough of it and people are getting hurt or even killed as a result of saboteur activity. However, the saboteurs, rather than the platforms, are the ones who need regulating. This is what we do in the UK; by criminalising nasty speech we rob it of any idea of respectability or equality in the marketplace of ideas.
So basically, to counter saboteurs we have a choice; regulate the platform or regulate the people who use it.
Censorship? Yep. Bad? Yes, because hate speech laws are widely abused to enforce the narrative of the ruling party. So what do we do? If we're going to go down the "More, better speech" path someone's going to have to commit to provide it and honestly, I doubt that's going to happen. Result: censorship of platforms because it's easier to regulate platforms than the people who use them, isn't it?

There's a good chance the unfortunate doctor ended up with PTSD as a result of being bullied by an over-excited officer pointing a gun at him for hours.
..and wouldn't last long, Thad. Once the effects kick in and the screaming starts, the laws would be repealed. I can see a big upheaval like that lasting for a week at the most.

This might be a good time to mention how radio was used to organise lynch mobs back in the day. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/apr/26/lynchings-memorial-us-south-montgomery-alabama
There was a carnival atmosphere around these things and it was considered a wholesome family activity.
Anyone who wants to blame social media for the bad behaviours of evil people needs to take a look at history.

In any case, it's not really the internet companies geo-fencing the EU because it's convenient, it's the EU effectively forcing them to do so.
