While I agree that infringement is not theft, I would like to see it spelled out succinctly and more often exactly what infringement is and specifically how that hurts rights holders (regardless of questionability of holding rights in the first place or the length of those terms.)
I say this be cause I think acknowledgement of your opponents position (and feelings) is a powerful negotiating tool.
How is someone (person or corporation) who goes out and purchases the rights to a patent, where they have no intent on producing goods or service with that patent, and only intends to collect licensing revenue, not also playing the "Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie!" card?
One example that I will grant is when a patent is aquired with hope or intent for defense against other patent infringement claims.
I think it is useful to have protection against someone excluding you from the opportunity to utilize your inventions or ideas (for a LIMITED period of time.) But if you hold patents with NO intention of using them except to skim profit from others who actually produce economic benefits through goods and services then I don't see that you deserve the protection.
Maybe I just see the world differently but I consider "patent trolls" to be parasites on society that offer no benefit what so ever.
The longer they can stretch out the income stream the easier it is to do that fancy Hollywood accounting. If you capture the market quickly all those profits will be difficult to hide.
Rather than argue over several interpretations of the statement, how about someone with the resources or connection actually ask them what they specifically meant?
I have no problem with remakes, other than they are rarely as good as the original. And I actually like reboots.
Not limited to movies, I enjoy the re-telling of stories, re-interpretations or adaptations. Its really too bad that everything is locked up in copyrights. Allowing anyone to retell a story would lead to a much richer story-land, even if there would still be a shortage of NEW stories.
The root problem with capitalism is that its practitioners have forgotten there are other quality reasons to do things other than aquisition of financial wealth.
I think it is a mistake to compare sharing and re-sharing of information and ideas with works of art. While the two may be intertwined they are not inter-changeable. TechDirt's goal (I think) is to disseminate information. Taking news and ideas about issues that the authors are interested or concerned with and making it known among more people. Art works, original or appropriated and modified are created because the artist wants to create. They may want to tell a story or send a message or convey an idea or any of a million other possibilities. But they are motivated by the desire to express them selves more than the desire to inform others and (possibly) sway opinions.
As I said the two very similar and can have common end results, but they are not the same thing.

Re: Re: Re: ".. when the current generation is old enough ..."
You're right they haven't taken over, but they are beginning to filter in. Any who I know that are in a position or have interest in "running things" have long sing lost any intelligent or open thinking they may have possessed during their college years (or younger.)
I think namely, their idealism is gone. They have no interest in making the world a better place, just a better place for themselves and people like themselves.
Re: ".. when the current generation is old enough ..."
When the current generation is old enough to run things they will find ways to F**K it up that will boggle your mind. The "current" generation is always the one who seems to "get it" and yet when they get to the age where they begin to take the controls they immediately throw every good and well considered thought out of the nearest window. I saw it happen to the 'boomers, I saw it happen to Gen'X, and I expect to see it happen over and over again as long as our society is centered around financial wealth and physical beauty.
I haven't seen anyone talk about the stock values of any of these Big Content companies (Disney / MCA Universal / Sony /.etc) Are they improving or declining over public perception of the issues? What about the *IAAs? Are they publicly traded? Have anyone divested them selves over SOPA/PIPA; Have they recommended others do so? Why is there no anti-SOPA/PIPA campaign to devalue their share price by just dumping their stock?
