As much as I hate to admit it, the AC is kinda right about this one. I remember when Napster first came out it took the better part of 3 hours to download a single song. Now with my 30mbit connection I can download everything an artist ever did in the amount of time it takes me to make a coffee.
Another limiting factor was/is storage space. My freshman computer had a whopping 8GB of hard drive capacity and I simply couldn't afford to devote much of it to music.
The caveat is that sharing was rampant back then as well. It may not have been done via residential connections, but as an undergrad I had plenty of friends bring their laptops over for LAN parties and we'd swap around whatever media we wanted. Sharing culture is NOT going to go away. You can try to demonize and criminalize it as much as you want, you simply cannot change a basic aspect of primate behavior.
Doubtful at best. I could send novels utilizing the amount of bandwidth that it would take to load this webpage. When used with compression, text files are light sneeezes in the hurricane of teh intarwebs.
So...by your logic if I get up during a commercial I'm stealing. If I skip the commercials via DVR, I'm stealing. Your arguments simply don't hold water.
I watch The Big Bang Theory live == Legal
I record The Big Bang Theory onto a DVR == Legal
I watch The Big Bang Theory via the CBS (or whatever) website == Legal
I watch The Big Bang Theory via Netflix / Amazon == Legal
I download The Big Bang Theory via a torrent or usenet == Illegal
I simply cannot fathom why one of those scenarios is illegal. I know that the law has been bought and paid for, but in the ethical minds of the populace, there is no moral difference between watching a freely broadcast show live, or downloading said show through another means.
Is it really entitlement when were being sold our own culture, repackaged? I understand that everybody needs to get paid, I really do get that. The problem that I think most people have is that the media companies are deliberately making it as difficult as possible for people to consume their goods, and then cry foul when they take the path of least resistance.
Imagine a company sells photographs of a mountain on their property. They're a bit overpriced, but are professionally done. The only problem is that if you're from outside the country, you have to wait an additional 8 weeks for delivery. In addition you have to pinky swear to never show the photo to anybody else. Would you act surprised if people just took their own photos of your mountain?
Megaupload is where all of my phone ROMs were hosted. The developers would upload the image, and thousands of people would download and, I can't emphasize this enough, LEGALLY! All it would take is a few hundred instances like that to throw your statistics into a new light.
People like you are why we can't have nice things.
I live in Northern Nevada, and you haven't seen distracting billboards until you've been to Reno or Vegas. Nothing quite like driving down the highway at 11 PM and having your rods and cones pwn3d by a gigawatt of light advertising the latest semi-nude review.
I have a number of sites through a number of providers running the gammut from GoDaddy to 1and1. While I do appreciate the pricing and service of the latter, the sleaziness of the former is making me consider this. I transferred many of the domains away from GoDaddy a few months ago when they came out in support of SOPA, the last 3 may be next if I can lobby my cause well enough.
I can trade marijuana with people using a the internet. I can trade sex using the internet. So ACTA will not only stop child pornography and copyright infringement, but it will also stop sex trafficking and drug use! Huzzah!
We need some new blood in the political parties. Right now the difference between Democrat and Republican is nothing more than color preference in one's logo. It's no wonder that voter turnout is lower and lower each year, when you have to choose between two equally sleazy candidates (in any office) it's simpler to just stay at home. There needs to be a viable option for third, fourth, and fifth parties in this country. If we can purge the false dichotomoy between R and D we may see some force for good for the common person. Until then it's lawyers fighting lawyers over who gets to feed off of our tax dollars.
