At this point (early forties) I pretty much accepted that in spite of all that "miraculous advancement in medicine" (that somehow still manage to have failed to cure or even just effectively treat any major disease in the last half century) any cure that will cure anything I might remotely care about will only come along long past my expiration date. Ehhh, even medicine isn't what it used to be - now get off my lawn...!
There's a very interesting sideways implication here, unrelated to the copyright aspects: why are critics, the people you want to see your movie in the best possible light, still getting DVDs instead of the best format possible - some form of HD?!? And the obvious answer is - because the quality of the movie comes through perfectly fine with a DVD, HD does not add all that much to that at all. And that is why I'm still perfectly happy with my considerable DVD collection (incidentally, all of it purchased) with more or less zero interest in Blu-ray - watching a spinning bone turn into a satellite I'm really, really not noticing how many pixels it is consisting of...
"That is, life plus 50 years, rather than the widespread life plus 70 years." How about life OR 50 years, whichever is shorter? ...No? Fine then, you keep following your ways - I'll keep following mine...
Oh, just wait until commercial 3D printer manufacturers jump on the bandwagon and start locking their printers to their own filament spools! To quote the datasheet of the latest and greatest Marvell chip, especially designed for 3D printers:
"Ensures authentic materials with connectors for up to four 88PA800 security chips"
A really lovely argument that could essentially be summed up a lot more concisely by referring the plaintiff to Arkell vs. Pressdram (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_Eye#Litigation, paragraph four)
I guess they just helpfully wanted to aid any misguided idiot who might think the police is there to protect him make an informed decision regarding the issue...
All free-to-play might not be a scam and it might not be destroying all of humanity, but we've seen zero evidence to support that assumption as of yet: all evidence we have supports the opposite.
A few hundred years back those who had power could take anything from anybody, any time they wanted - and everybody was perfectly aware that was the case. Now, we're MUCH more civilized, and in large parts of the world those in power allegedly serve the good of the people - except they can still take anything from anybody, any time they want, and hardly even bother pretending to justify it. There's simply no comparison, right...?
No documentation of features... kills the soul. Ah. Considering I don't think I ever opened a game manual, like, ever, that would indeed explain neatly why I'm a soulless bastard.
There seems to be a lot of confusion about things coming out of the mouth of a politician - any politician - having anything to do with reason, facts, sane and desirable actions or anything of that sort, as opposed to simply being whatever things said politician thinks "his" people want to hear him say. Unfortunately, not everyone takes them as such.
"Serve and Protect" - yeah, the biggest joke since monkeys figured what a stick can be used for (unless of course you understand that's not referring to YOU...)
I'm one of the original backers, who only backed because of the offline promise, and was lucky enough to actually commit only after its announcement - because the latest hoop people who rightly want their money back (some waiting for more than a month now) have to jump through is a check "whether they backed before offline mode was announced". Which is (beside being grounds for flat-out refusal and an incredibly petty excuse) just the latest in the line of multiple hard slaps Mr. Braben and company chose to reward with the very people they took advantage of when they really needed help only to abandon them once they were no longer indispensable. Maybe they should just rename their game "You Fuckers: Tough Love" so there can be no confusion about their true colours...
