I find it incredibly odd how various IP lawyers get so upset about Michael Geist pointing out -- accurately -- when copyright laws don't do what those very same lawyers promised they would do.
I don't know if odd is the right word. Sadly, I kind of expect it from quite a few of them.
I can't tell this from the article... does this mean that Kenya wants to prevent non-Kenyans from even making kiondo or kikoi, or does it just want to keep people from patenting / trademarking it so that no one can claim exclusive rights? The former would seem rather restrictive, while the latter would seem to be championing the public domain of Kenya, and that I could understand.
It does say on the ILO site that "There is no specific ownership claim of the original weaving idea by any individual or community." so if the law is written properly, it could be beneficial.
yeah sure you have got your freedom of speech so i can draw naked pictures of your mom who might be very important to you.
Go right ahead, if I found naked drawings of my mom, I'd either laugh at the absurdity or shake my head and ignore them. I would not, however, yell "LOOK EVERYONE! THIS GUY DREW NAKED PICTURES OF MY MOM, PUNISH THE PENCIL COMPANY!" Why would I want to give them the attention that would cause?
I found the ad on YouTube and had, oh, 5 or 6 of my friends watch it, not for the product, but just because it really was incredibly entertaining. I wish more ads could be like this.
We're not seeing a huge return yet, but haven't rolled out everything we plan to. There are some regular readers now, but at this point, there's been more learning how all the tech works than fully engaging the community. Basically, it's still in the experimental phase, but I have high hopes. If it does work out, you bet your sweet bippy I'd want to help other authors as well :)
I'm actually trying to help a friend do this. We're releasing his book (a fantasy novel in serial version, a chapter at a time) at www.aromathus.com and have set up a couple of blogs for him, as well as adding additional information (maps, world history, short stories). Audio podcasts are going to start very soon, and probably some videos on YouTube in short order as well. We don't have a complete print copy of the book ready yet to sell, but that isn't too far down the road.
And he decided to release this all under a CC license, because we both agreed, we want people to be able to share this. Locking it all up and saying 'Mine mine mine!' doesn't make you any friends. Letting people share it is how people get to know about it.
I'm in agreement that there's something about a physical book that goes beyond the text. Sure, it's nice to have an audio copy of a book when driving, or an electronic version on your kindle / iphone / whatever when you're around town and find yourself waiting somewhere, but nothing beats the tactile sensation of curling up with a good paper book.

I've often been amused by the saying "I reject your reality, and replace it with my own". Seems Moore has perfected that.
