Rupert Murdoch claims that the Internet is stealing his paying customers. Demands that the government pass legislation that helps underwrite his business model.
Congress rallies to his defense. Passes the Journalism Integrity Support Mandate. Detractors claim that it flies in the faces of every honest American.
One thing is for certain: there is no stopping them -- the Droids will soon be here. And I for one welcome our new Googly overlords. I’d like to remind them that as a trusted Internet citizen, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground data mines...
True, they didn't use Kool-Aid. They used an organically-grown, non-hypoallergenic, carbon-neutral, soy-based, naturally-flavored liquid gently trod upon (but not down-trodden...) by an indigenous, recently-discovered tribe of socially-advanced, at-peace-with-nature, Birkenstock-wearing ironic hipsters.
Minor details such as that can be dealt with by simply creating an industry-vetted organization, the Directorate Of Undersigned Communications Handlers Embodying the Brokerage of Artistic Goods and Services.
The aforementioned exceptions will apply only to members of that organization, and all membership applications will be thoroughly screened. Wouldn't want the riff-raff getting in, now would we?
Then the New Zealand government will simply amend the law declaring immunity-from-prosecution to MPs and media rights-holders. There, that solves that problem...
But it still doesn't justify Netflix not allowing her an exemption. Granted, it's their playground, and they can impose whatever restrictions they wish, but I feel that that position will end up hurting them in the long run.
No, the open suitcase analogy is right because anyone passing by (casual browsing) can look down and see the KP. Opening the files is analogous to opening up his November issue of Loli-Land and shoving the centerfold in someone's face...
Good effect of piracy: I get to watch porn and movies, and no kittens were harmed to do so.
Assuming, of course that the kittens were willing participants, and not simply strays brought in off the street with the promise of free cheezburgers, got hooked on catnip and forced into the industry just to get their next fix.
Quite a while back, Los Angeles lowered business and property taxes to lure companies from the Bay area to come down. It worked. For a while.
Then they jacked up the taxes, so a whole boatload of companies left town. Many moved to San Diego, many moved back to San Francisco.
The last few years, San Diego's jacked up the business and property taxes (along with a number of other really stupid, short-sighted moves...) and a whole bunch of businesses are either leaving or closing up shop.

Then again, it might have something to do with most of the corporate clients with whom we had service contracts.
