If you read the article, he was saying there wasn't a case of someone being abducted and killed. Of course there are abductions. There are abductions at schools too. So let's use media hype and say that schoold are a dangerous location for teens and preteens from predators. Better yet, the mall. Oh noes, better lock them inside, oh wait, wasn't there a study that said most abuse comes from people related? Guess we better just put all kids in a stasis tube, freeze dry them, and use them for stem cell research as they aren't safe anywhere else either.
You know, I understand the U.S. is making a world-wide a$$ of itself thanks to politician, but to every other net savvy person on the globe, this actually affects you too..These stupid laws are not aimed just at american, but ANYONE that connects to a server that can be claimed to reside in america. These politicians are going to try to use the wonderful 6 degrees of separation by saying if you can pay with american money to join said virtual environment, then that means the finance server is touching american soil, and thus it affects american xenophobia. It is unfortunate that the backlash of narrow minded McCarthyism actors is going to affect not only what one country does, but start the dividing line all over again, all over the globe. The walls are already being built, both real and virtual, and soon border checkpoints will start again, both real and virtual. You can scoff, but take a look at each county's legal system and see how many court cases are influenced but the dictatorship of the U.S.
Throughout nature we always hear of the phrase "There's always a bigger fish" yet humans decided long ago that they were going to be against nature on this. Where in nature the "bigger fish" is the dominant one on the food chain, humans are repeatedly of the mindset: "the bigger they are, the harder they fall"; hence why everyone plays king of the hill. The only thing that's changed throughout history, is the fights have gotten dirtier.
My only concern will be who is going to play referee? Whenever differences of opinions range, there is bound to be the advent of "flamers" and the like. Opinionated pages are fine, as that is what most "news" organizations are hoping for. I just worry that a certain topic, especially in a global environment, might tip the balance of scales to an all out slugfest of words. I do agree, of all the companies currently in the information dispersement business, that Google is the one that is the most likely to succeed.
I like no. 6's reply, but you forgot to mention that you have to file each request in triplicate, and get it signed by both the OS manufacturer, Processor manufacturer, and hard drive manufacturer. Upon which then you will still only have 30 days from the when you get your first request approval to get the rest of the request approvals and THEN you get to apply for the file archiving permits to finally remove it out of the system.
I'm getting kind of sick of always hearing that the big G wants to block this, limit that, etc. I propose that is G wants to really see where the problem lies, develop their own site as direct competition, or their own phone service, or their own school, all as direct competition to the "mainstream" ones. Do a landmark study of 2-3 years and see what sort of business they have with their limitations vs. "mainstreams". Instead of passing laws that they haven't got a clue about, let's see if they can do better
What else is new? "Cleaning up" is relative to the beholder, maybe in their eyes, the "cleaned up" the install so it is even more unobtrusive? Maybe their backers, (more than likely webroot and lavasoft) think that if no one knows it is there, then it must be ok. Never mind the uninstall leporsy that it leaves behind. Methinks these people watched too many commercials as a kid and now all they see is a way to give regular surfers the 5 minute commercial break every fifteen minutes, in the form of time needed to remove the dreaded pop-ups, pop-unders, pop-sides, and pop-tarts.
