Not only are the older workers printing things out, but so are less tech-savvy people. In the military, I've run into so many supervisors who want a paper copy of something that you've already emailed to them. Even though it's incredibly easy to route an request chit for approval via email, they still want you to print it out and put it in a folder.
For the same money you spend on mobile TV, you can buy several books. Is literacy truly going away?
There is nothing on TV worth watching as is, why would I want to pay extra to watch it on a sub-3" screen w/ poor audio. I'll bet you still get the ads too, so you get to pay to see ads.
One thing that wasn't discussed is how they work in CD players. Having bumps on the bottom sounds like some players and drives wouldn't tolerate them that well. Plus, would the laser be able to focus properly now that the CD is raised up higher than normal?
AFAIK, the reason these attempts keep failing is because of how they are worded. They are so vague that they end up being too broad in effect, hence the courts say they are no good.
If the politicians just said something simple like, "If a game is rated 'M', then a child under 17 can't purchase it", then they might have a chance at it getting through the courts.
Of course, this whole battle will be as effective as the fight against under-age drinking and smoking. The kids will just have someone older buy it for them, or ask Grandma for a video game at Xmas, or rent if from Gamefly, or ... They will never be able to prevent kids from getting something they want.
These laws will never stop stupid parents from buying whatever games their little brat kids want. Just look at that case a few months back when the lady bought her grandson GTA:SA. The kid may not have been able to buy the game but all he had to do was ask for it.
Imagine being able to catagorize all your porn files automatically. If the tech could support it, you could make a DB listing not only the people, but even what's being depicted.
The people who watch the channels now will be the same ones who will buy it a la carte. Just because it's part of a package doesn't imply they will get more viewers. I've got the remote set so those channels are skipped.
If people want to watch it, they will. Otherwise they won't and there's nothing the evangilists can do that will stop that (unless they go "A Clockwork Orange" and force people to watch).
Good call! I was about to say the same thing. One thing I haven't heard though. Can these protected CD's be copied via a set-top CD copier, like the ones amateur DJ's use? Or is the protection strictly for PC's?
The music has been around for hundreds of years. I can't honestly see any IP that can be claimed, unless the BBC used a CD to post the music files. However, being the BBC, they probably own their own copies of the music and posted them.
If that's the case, then the music companies can't say a bloody thing. AAMOF, that brings up a question I have: if you own a recording that the copyright has expired on, say an original 75rpm record, can you legally post the song on the 'net? I'm sure the record companies will say no, but can they legally stop you?
The companies are pissed that people are saying bad things about them, yet they continue to find new ways of pissing people off so more bad things can be said about them. I say, let's just boycott the lot of them.
AAMOF, I currently do that w/ Wal-Mart and Best Buy. I only go there when absolutely necessary, i.e. when my wife can't find something at a better store.
I think for most anti-MS people, it's not a matter of hating MS per se (though many of them do for whatever reason), it's the fact that, normally, people don't have a choice. MS software is pretty much all you can buy unless you build your own. If you want something else, you have to hunt for it, which includes Macs since you can't find them everywhere like PCs.
However, I do agree that people should quit whining and just use/view what they want. Don't stop other people from using what they want. It's just like religion; don't force your views on me and I won't give you a hard time. (Though trying to find a tolerant religion nowadays is nearly impossible).
I consider email to be like "time-shifting" communications. If you can't talk to someone immediately, then you can send an email that can be read at a convienient time.
Why would someone reasonably expect that putting a small electronic device w/ an LCD in the pocket of your jeans won't damage it in some fashion? A shirt pocket maybe, but not your pants. Even if it didn't get scratched, I'd expect some damage to the LCD.
It's not like jeans are a soft material; people don't clean their glasses with a pants leg.
The American education system blows. I won't say it's the worst in the world but I'm sure it's right up there. Yet everyday I get crap from someone who thinks that home-schooling children is wrong; the biggest "argument" being that kids won't get socialization.
My counter-argument is the fact that kids go to school to learn, not socialize. Ergo if they aren't learning because they're distracted by a girl's low-cut top or from some kid with a cell phone in class, then why complain about the education system at all? Schools can't compete with all this crap. Not to mention the whole safety issue between school shootings and "normal" bullying.
So why not try something new? Whether it's charter schools, private schools, home-schooling, or even public schools that require uniforms (or at least a dress code), something different needs to be tried, because obviously the status quo isn't doing the job.
People will always be distracted while driving, whether it's eating, talking to a passenger, or messing with the kids in the back. However, nearly every time I see a bad driver, nine times out of ten it's because a cell phone is glued to her head. I say "her" on purpose because, generally speaking, the biggest offenders are women (in my experience). I will say my single biggest complaint about cell phones are the ones that have the walkie-talkie feature. It's even more annoying than speaker phones. When will people learn, I don't care about their conversation! And that stupid "bu-beep" noise whenever they talk just pisses me off. It was great when I lived in Japan; the Japanese people would cover their mouth when they talked so they wouldn't disturb the people around them.

How often do you really use the extras?
I'll admit, if I'm spending ~$20 for a DVD, then I want the extras. It's a much better deal than spending $15+ on a CD that has 2-3 good songs on it.
But honestly, all I really care about is the movie. If I can buy a DVD that has just the movie for $10 or less, I'm perfectly happy with that.
