Google is the saddest stereotype of technologists not being able to see beyond their cubicle. They do not seem to be able to differentiate between the technological differences/challenges and the human impacts. When a company grows to the size and influence of google they need to have people who can grow as well.
Remember kids, when the government helps people it will make them lazy, but when it comes to companies it will make them more competitive. Also, corporations are people.
What will this mean when Article 11 and Article 13 are ratified? Has the legality of Creative Commons licenses in Europe been clearly established if these proposals become law?
It would also be nice for the press to stop posting repetitious tweets about politicians and let folks know about any firms that are preying on families' anger and despair to milk them of their money while wasting time in court.
Unfortunately, due to the partisan nature of this discussion I cannot share my opinion on a political official trying to limit his constituent's proclivity to click on a little thumbs up image.
Why are they sending it to the President? Presumably, the people sponsoring and supporting the would either be the Republican party or the President's election campaign. They surely must put some firewall between the campaign and the candidate? Then again, they surely should pay attention to venue licenses.
If we want to outlaw being an "asshole" then we are going to need more prisons. (Cannot wait for the incoming verbiage, though, "If you outlaw assholes then only outlaws will have assholes.")
All those comedians who thought it would be okay to make disparaging comments about world leaders will have to rethink their schtick now. Especially if those leaders also happen to be associated with a religious hierarchy. The House of Saud is relieved.
Looks like there are three states with Attorney Generals with plans to become Governor. Reliable corporate money is always welcome in a politician's pocket.
Not only do they want us to pay every carrier but also watch commercials unless you pay a premium price just to watch a couple of shows. Stay tuned to CEOs whining in hearings that life is not fair (for them).
Basanta should take the work Chamandy claims is being used improperly and see if the algorithm matches anything else. If so, then the new person should go after Chamandy based on Chamandy's own argument.Or just sic them on each other.
Regardless, anyone who buys this argument is essentially saying that citing another work is a copyright violation. Hence, you are legally obligated to plagiarize other people's work.
It is interesting that when politicians go up against the harsh reality of the limitations of mathematics and encryption they just assume a technical solution can be found. When it comes to actual technology they just shrug and decide it is hard.
So what you are saying is that a quasi-democratic government is gathering information to maintain valuable secrets, but being information it wants to be free, and the previsouly mentioned government is making information freely available. Sounds like a Monty Python skit.
On the plus side the court would surely not be used by unscrupulous people to get information about people they do not like on the internet? </sarcasm>
Mr. Woods' inconsistency on free speech is not nearly as surprising as is the idea that he has a romantic partner. That whole "lid for every pot" thing is an amazing truism.
Re: Re: Free speech means let them be and not try to sort it out
My apologies for being too terse. I was trying to say that the efforts to increase intermediary liability comes from a desire to solve problems that are best left alone. Abusing legal tools such as the DMCA is a problem that should be addressed. The problem of people being nasty to one another is not a problem that should be addressed by increasing the responsibilities of service providers.
Free speech means let them be and not try to sort it out
Just sorting out who did what to whom in this situation is a total mess
The notion that some busybody feels the need to sort it out and make things right is the problem. People are messy, and interactions between people can be a cesspool or dark thoughts. There is no need to sort things out and make things right. The very nature of free speech requires us to allow people to wallow in their own mud holes without interference and without retribution for both real and imagined insults.
