Issa made his money with a numbers of inventions. Our vice president got into a heated discussion with him a number of years ago. Patents are a small businesses best friend. You use them to protect your market while building a brand. After the patents expire the brand gives you additional protection.

We have an epidemic of big companies building their fortunes based on intentional serial infringement of others inventions. The thieves like to talk about "patent trolls" to mask the fact that they are committing larceny on the grandest of scales.
As a result of their counting on people not being able to defend their patent property rights and the difficulty of an inventor being able to draw investors to pay for them to defend their property rights those companies have intentionally left patents which they should have acquired on the market.
Capitalism always fills market opportunities. Anyone with any common sense understands this. It is hard to blame Intellectual Ventures for stepping into a market opportunity which patent pirating large companies maliciously created.
I am not a fan of Intellectual Ventures (IV). I believe that they do not give inventors a fair shake. But it is a fact that they do treat inventors better than the companies who whine about patent trolls who gave them nothing. All these companies need to do to stop their litigation problems is to buy the patents they need before using them. If they started buying all the patents Intellectual Ventures would wither and die.
Working for IV is most certainly more honorable than working for any member of the Coalition for Patent Piracy & Fairness (a trade association of serial infringers and asset thieves).

I and many other inventors have been fighting Patent Deform since the early 1990 time frame. Big business has an entitlement mentality, they love capitalism when it serves their interests but become intellectual property socialists when someone produces an invention.
For more than a decade, year after year and defeat after defeat members of the Piracy Coalition have been painting rosy predictions of passage of Patent Deform legislation in the near future.
On one side we have the Coalition for Patent Piracy & Fairness and the Coalition for 21st Century Patent Deform & HARMonization, collectively a very small number of very large companies who either never were serious inventors or who have lost their ability to produce significant inventions.
On the other side there are tens of thousands for companies who use patents to create new wealth, jobs and prosperity. We grow stronger and better organized every year. "You have to consider the sheer number of patents that are granted every year, and the fact that it's almost impossible to know somebody has patented something until they start trying to exercise that patent."
That sheer number of patents covers a very large number of art areas. Since you only need to search a few art areas it is possible, even easy to search and to know what is patented. I suggest that you start studying the classification system. Even a TechDIRT Insider should be able to understand and learn to use the Classification system.

"Doesn't your local community college over remedial reading classes, Darryl?"
To which I ask doesn't Coward's community college OFFER remedial reading classes, and even more important classes in in science, math and LOGIC.
It is not uncommon for people who excel in technical areas to not be as proficient in writing. That does not mean that they are stupid, quite the opposite, they are usually far more intelligent then those who excel at communication.
"Innovation takes dedication, perseverence, the ability to connect things in ways they've never been connected before -- in short, intelligence rather than cunning."
True, but the problem is most of the companies claiming to be innovators are claiming others innovations as their own.
When that happens real inventors have no choice except to sue the pants off of the shyster innovators.

That sheer number of patents covers a very large number of art areas. Since you only need to search a few art areas it is possible, even easy to search and to know what is patented. I suggest that you start studying the classification system. Even a TechDIRT Insider should be able to understand and learn to use the Classification system.
"Do you not see the huge potential for abuse here?"
Of course we see the abuse here, big companies launching wave after wave of unjustified challenges against inventors, their purpose being to bankrupt the inventor.

Re: Re: #1 Lawsuits...
True, but the problem is most of the companies claiming to be innovators are claiming others innovations as their own.
When that happens real inventors have no choice except to sue the pants off of the shyster innovators.
