I don't think anyone is in charge at Sony. One side of the company likes to lock down. Another side creates decent PC hardware that is used to subvert said lock downs.
Re: It's free, but makes money through complimentary products.
"All of MS's products are in one way or another used to gain revenue through another product, or avenue of that product. Andriod from Google does nothing like that."

I knew a goth girl in my youth that could pull her corset to tight you could put both hands around her waist and touch your finger tips. It was quite disturbing. The really odd thing was, she had normal eating habits.
Since I fist logged on to the internet I've been waiting for something like Google books to appear, and when it started to appear, through sites like project Gutenberg I got excited. Then Google came into the space and I was elated. The possibility of having the whole history of humanities written word online and searchable was a sci-fi geeks dream come true.

I really don't think its a waist of time at all, mainly because many times when you complain or hear others complain it will inspire someone to do something about it.
"I can do it better" has been the inspiration for many innovators.
1. Start a blog.
2. Create good content (and never stop).
3. Promote blog, both online and in real life (readings at open mike nights, gorilla marketing).
4. Interact with readers.
5. Make it easy for people to share your work.
6. Sell scarce goods (signed books, me, t-shirts, etc).
7. Make a decent living off of what I create.
