I remember reading a study about what sounds cue dogs that the owner's vehicle is approaching. It seems that it's mostly the high-pitched ones beyond human hearing range, and mostly the ones coming from the suspension.
Wince we're being pedantic and all, the only way they would really by "jackbooted thugs" is if they were actually wearing jackboots. Since those have been out of fashion with cops for a very, very long time, it's more accurate to just call them "armed thugs".
"Yes, my broadband router at home does have firewall features on it, but that won't stop outbound connections from my computer at all."
Then your router's firewall is worthless (as many of them are). Get a standalone one, or pick up an old computer from a secondhand shop and turn it into your firewall.
Yes, but if I turned them on and they didn't work, I'd just turn them off and forget about it. It wouldn't bother me that they didn't work because I don't care.
It's not so much that the US "chose" it. It's more that when you hate something long and intensively, you end up becoming just like what it is you hate. It's inescapable human nature.
"And how many other militants were lost in this particular strike?"
To be honest, at this point I have no clue who the US considered "militants" and who it doesn't. Apparently, you're a "militant" simply by physically being in the wrong location or by irritating the US.
Even with appropriate clothing, being out in the pouring rain/hail/snow sucks mightily. It sucks even more if you have to wear a clean, dry uniform of some sort where you're going.

Depends on where on the internet you put it. There are plenty of spaces on the internet that are intended to be completely private.

I don't use Windows for my firewall. It runs Linux, using the firewall capabilities that are built in. I use Shorewall to ease configuration.
My firewall sits between the internet and the rest of my network, so it protects everything attached to my LAN, regardless of what OS they're running.

Lots and lots of people (including myself) care a great deal. We just deal with it by avoiding Apple products like the plague.
