It's kinda unfair when even in democracies DRM is applied to content for which you paid despite pirates getting the better end of the deal despite them paying nothing.
I would posit China's Tiananmen Square incident as an authoritarian way to squash the Streisand Effect, meaning Barbara Streisand could only make sure nobody knew of her house in Malibu in a place like China considering how successful China's campaign to memory-hole what happened in Tiananmen Square is to their own subjects.
There is a huge, huge difference between what Disney is doing, and, say, me refusing to call a gay man or a trans woman a "faggot" or another slur, for instance: Disney is silencing themselves for fears of governmental punishment, whereas I would not be punished by the US government if I chose not to use slurs, but I would reveal myself to be an anti-queer bigot and people would treat me as such. In other words, one is the government saying "you can't do that anywhere within our jurisdiction" and the other is basically people saying "we reject you because we don't like what you say".
Terrible analogy. If NordicTrack refuses to honor the warranty for a hacked system, at the very least there will probably be DIY forums and other places on the internet that would show you how to fix the NordicTrack if things go south.
If NordicTrack acts like Apple or John Deere and sues independent repair shops, however, it means that repairs would get a lot more expensive.
It's just that the modifications for the Game Boys include backlights, "professional"-sounding audio outputs, and clock speed adjusters. I don't think Nintendo would pay to repair those! That being said, I know lots of other people who are knowledgeable about the Game Boy's anatomy such that they could repair them if I wanted them to do so, so I don't see the voided warranty as a big deal.
I do have an extremely negative opinion on these "bots", as they snatched up tickets to concerts and other events to which I wanted to go within minutes of them opening up and I had no chance to get a ticket.
Is a legislative solution the answer? I've read enough TechDirt to know that there will always be unintended consequences to these things (like what would happen to StubHub, for instance). However, as much as I admire Mr. Masnick, I didn't see him make a case for how a specific proposal can hurt, especially since we must now consider shortages and finite economies.
My local gym has ways to plug in iDevices (if not Android tablets as there's too much variance there). At the very least NordicTrack could've done something similar.
I think it is. I think "We won't repair it" is a far better position for these companies to take than "You can't repair it". If Nintendo had right-to-repair at the era of the NES and Game Boy, the chiptune scene would be nonexistent and my life would be different.

My perspective
I do have an extremely negative opinion on these "bots", as they snatched up tickets to concerts and other events to which I wanted to go within minutes of them opening up and I had no chance to get a ticket.
I think "bots" have a more insidious effect than piracy, as they've been proven to cause harm whereas with piracy the © owners sue their potential customers. With scalpers, the © owners are unable to meet their customers' demands because the scalpers put the item out of reach.
