The actual Libertarian Candidate, is on a whole, one of the best, most honorable politicians I've seen in my lifetime running for high political office.
He's more than deserving of my vote, and seeing how New Mexico didn't descend into anarchy when he was Governor, I think the country would do mighty fine with him as President.
I really wish he'd have been in the foreign policy debate, that would have been a real show, if Gary had been there too. Instead we got a "me too" downer of a debate with violent agreement between the two parties.
Yeah, because killing the unborn is so much the _lesser_ evil.
There are legitimate arguments to be made over how much control of ones actions the government should be allowed to take, but your the one who framed this as good/evil.
Basically the internet is way way way more important to mankind and human communications and the distribution of ideas than whether people get paid via some old school system (which Mike correctly notes looks more like indentured servitude than the net does).
So what we're left with is that fact that artists damn well better learn how to use this fantastic new distribution, advertising, promotional, connection tool that is the internet to build careers that work for today, not the 1950's.
Those of you who like the phrase, "If you've done nothing wrong, you have nothing to worry about" take note.
The government's actions here prove that they will go to drastic lengths to prove you've done "something" wrong, and then trample on your rights accordingly.
I always love the authorities stating that ignorance of the laws is no defense. But in these days of thousand page laws that or representatives don't even read, how can we be expected to really "know" the law? It all becomes an excuse to fish for any reason to exert control over the people.
Our founding fathers believed that is was more benefical to let some of the guilty go free than to risk punishing innocent people.
Our current government now believes that no one can be innocent....
Re: Not difficult: copyright is the right to control copies.
Are you that efffing dense?
The reason horrible outcomes haven't happened yet is because there is no clear view of the law.
If the supreme court says first sale rights are gone for imported goods you will get to watch companies line up their lawyers and file their cases to take our right to resell _everything_ away from us.
Imagine how happy the car companies could be if they could completely shut down the used car markets. Now everyone will always need to buy a new car....
If Wiley wins this case our economy is screwed. One only needs to look as far as the mess we have with patents to realize that this could get really really bad.
But if you boot those who illegally download off of the net, then sure they won't continue stealing any songs,
BUT THEY WON'T BE BUYING ANY EITHER!!!
So, if six/three strikes laws are successful at removing IP offenders from the net the record companies will not have their music "stolen", and they also will have less of it bought.
Again, the record companies are more than willing to cut off their nose to spite their face.
If Apple were to start signing artists and become a record company, they'd be smart enough and different enough to destroy all of the other record companies.
Does Pete really think that Apple couldn't offer nearly every modern artist a better deal that would make them more money than any other record company? Does he really think that Apple couldn't promote new artists into stardom? I've lost count of the number of times I've seen someone be the free artist of the day and then 2-3 months later they've become a big star.
Ironically if Apple did anything like what Pete is asking for, they'd be able to completely destroy the record industry.
So customers are getting good service that provides what they want at a reasonable price?
I can see why Time Warner is pissed. That's not fair, they need to get the message across to google that they are doing it wrong.
Note to wireless providers, internet providers, movie industry, and music industry: When your customers HATE you but still have to deal with you because they have no other options, the moment a new competitor that is fair and equitable that provides good service appears, they will tell you to fuck off and die.
The two men in the photo would have a stronger legal standing if they had not given ownership of their photo to the photographer.
With professional photography we very often think that we are having "our" picture taken and that it then is "ours." But it is the photographer's work of art, it is not at all ours.
On this case I think the photographer has clear legal standing against PAUS using their artwork. I don't think the men really have any strong legal standing in this at all.
However, if they had insisted in owning (or buying) the rights to their photo, they would have an even stronger standing than the photographer.
This is why you should pay extra to get the copyrights of photos you have taken of you.
I'm sorry but did she just magically land at the top job at DHS? Because how the hell do you supposedly work your way up in a career in politics over decades and not know how to use fucking e-mail?
This is elitist bullshit. Outside of this revelation there isn't anything else she's proven to be competent at with her job either. She doesn't just know nothing about e-mail, she knows nothing about airport security, border security, or cyber security.

Positions in DC
Wait scratch that, having a high level position is Washington DC might actually be directly proportional to ones _inability_ to do the job.
