I think many people, especially Techdirt readers and including myself, agree with Apple's view point, and being pragmatic and looking down the road to the future think Apple needs to fight the order.
We did learn the copyrights were not transferred to SCO as they were not listed. SCO had no standing to sue anyone over Unix or Linux copyrights. Groklaw has hundreds and hundreds of articles and court documents on this case and others if you care to research. I read the site for years- I still miss it.
How profitable is a great movie when most can not afford to buy a theater ticket? How much is a wonder drug worth if many, many are poor and not insured? All producers need consumers- productive consumers with disposable income. The rich can not be the only buyers and all businesses need a viable market.
All the gold on earth is useless to the last one standing.
Perhaps an open source project could be developed for DNA testing done for evidentiary purposes in civil and criminal cases. The source code could then be looked at and tested by anyone.
"As you may have heard, yesterday there was another mass shooting in the US. I know the topic of mass shootings and gun control and all that raise all sorts of emotions and opinions on all sides of the issue, but this is not the place to discuss them."
May I point out the 800 pound gorilla in the room? Perhaps this is what I first thought it could be- copyright law used as censorship. The Jim Jefferies clip is a very convincing comedic sketch about the ridiculous lack of gun control laws in the United States compared to Australia.
I thought about the routine when I was reading about the Oregon shootings yesterday and obviously I was not the only one. I almost looked it up myself. Too bad it is no longer available

I wonder if this transfer of "conversation" to social media has any relation to a enhancement of a revenue stream. As "they" so famously say: "Follow the money."

I started using Linux in July of 2004. I started out on the worst Linux distribution ever released- Lindows or whatever they had to change the name to. I went to Suse and have tried many, many distros since. I now use Ubuntu, somewhat begrudgingly, because it too has issues. However with Linux almost all perceived annoyances can be remedied with research and self-education.
A program is free software if the program's users have the four essential freedoms:
The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0). The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this. The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2). The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
On my last three computers I left a Windows partition for emergency use by my daughter and grandkids. It has rarely been used and each time I have had to boot into Windows I am reminded why I no longer use it. Even before reading this article I was hesitant about upgrading the Windows partition from 8.1 to 10.
Right now on my desk I have a USB stick and DVD with Ubuntu on it that I am going to give to a friend of mine to try Linux. Might I suggest you all do the same.
As with many other topics of discussion why is there no public outrage over a company claiming ownership and denying use of without license the iconic song Happy Friggin' Birthday. Since the song is sung at practically every private birthday party, at least here in the States, 'Merika has long since achieved Nirvana- every citizen a criminal.

Held in high esteem by many and loathed by some, Richard Stallman's philosophy on personal computing should be read by all. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Free_Software_Definition
