I was worried that more people would feel I was being unfair to Mike, seeing as, y'know, he writes how many articles every day?
I guess I came across as level-headed as I'd hoped :)
I was kinda hoping that Mike would post these with the story:
"(1) I totally trashed the idea in the post, said it was mistargeted and dumb. I never suggested it was a good or reasonable idea, and I thought it was more important to focus on the idea itself, rather than the person behind it. And it's a bit of a stretch to claim that Florian is a "Microsoft lackey."
(2) Title of the Pearl Jam post -- you say it's misleading, but I clearly say in the *title* that it's probably NOT the fan club doing it. But you're right that perhaps the headline could be improved.
(3) Third one, I can see your point, though if we're being specific, damage awards for infringement are not called "fines." They're awards. Fines are only if it's to the gov't."
On the subject of (1), I do, now, see where he's coming from; Why make an ad hominem when the idea itself is trash?
I just disagree that the idea is the interesting part of the story.
Mike sure is a patient guy, eh? Hard not to respect that.
I'm mildly exaggerating, but as I recall, somewhere close to 1/4 of the discs would fall apart really quickly, and maybe 1/2 of them would last any amount of time.
But really, you don't need numbers anywhere as high as that to piss off 50% of your customers. Each person just needs to buy 1 game each with this problem . . .
When I post as an AC (IE: For trolling, or because I forgot to login), I have never experienced any backlash whatsoever.

I'm often critical of Mike. In fact, I'm writing up something about that right now.
Okay, google search tells me that Florian Mueller is a "No Software Patents" guy, who seems upright, but he has ties to microsoft, and occasionally comes out across google on copyright & patent issues.
(I didn't know Florian was a microsoft crony from the first google search on his name, before you said he was connected. I figured some others wouldn't either)
I either have to accept that the CPC is wilfully harming the Canadian populace, presumably for their own bribes, or that they are stupid enough to think this could help our economy.
Let me summarize for people too lazy to click on the link, or read the drafted bill:
If the company tried to protect their content in anyway, their copyright rights trump yours in every way.
Which means, that if the product was protected, there are no fair dealing provisions for anyone.
No back-up CDs, no downloading movies, nothing that's legal currently would be legal if the CD or movie was protected in any way, no matter how crappy.
To me, what this boils down to is : All the big content companies will have a stronger copyright, because they can afford to 'protect' their goods, and sue anyone who breaks the protection.
From independent artists, or just about everyone on the web, big content companies will be able to take & steal even more freely than before, under 'fair dealing', even while their own works, because they're protected in an idiotic way, are immune to 'fair' dealing.
From your first linked article:
"The digital lock provisions are by far the biggest flaw in the bill, rules that some will argue renders it beyond repair."
If you want look for the specific cable, it was Tony Clement's office which asked that of the US. A google search for 'tony clement wikileaks 301' should find it easily.
No, jay, anonymous is right. The official opposition, the NDP, are throughly against C-32.
It's only the CPC that wants to pass it, and, thanks to wikileaks cables, we now know they were the ones that asked the US to bully them so that we could get some support here behind passing this bill, (and others).
Yes, you heard right, the CPC asked the US to put Canada on the 301 so that the people would back the CPC in making this decision, (and others). And we still haven't backed them.
