Re: Pending Nominations on the Executive Calendar (Civilian)
He has a lot fewer confirmations than Obama did at this point in 2009, with a similarly slim majority. (There were 60 Democrats then, sort of, as opposed to 50 now, but that was before Democrats eliminated the filibuster for executive nominees, so, then as now, every Democrat had to support a nominee in order to confirm.)
I think the comparison between COVID-19 and 9/11 is pretty flawed from the get-go. First of all, 9/11 killed a tiny fraction of the people COVID-19 has. And second, 9/11 was not contagious; failing to abide by the PATRIOT Act was not going to infect people at the grocery store.
To scale moderation, some sense of smallness needs to be preserved to allow people to own and curate areas that aren't overwhelmingly large, and to prevent half the world from converging on single points. This is the crux of why Techdirt moderation is pretty effective.

I'm as anti-FOSTA as the next guy, but this pretty clearly has nothing at all to do with FOSTA/SESTA. The article mentions it but doesn't explain how it's connected, and then immediately gives a real, unrelated reason that actually might make sense.
I assume you mean this bit:
Also of possible relevance: eBay recently began using the Dutch fintech company Adyen for electronic payment services. Like many payment-processing companies, Adyen refuses to participate in the sale of adult materials.
Are you sure payment processors' resistance to sales of adult material "has nothing at all to do with FOSTA/SESTA"?
While "this is an overbroad fishing expedition" is a legitimate criticism, "a Republican majority will not forget" is not. McCarthy is threatening legislative retaliation if the ISPs comply, and that's pretty horrifying too.
I mean I know "lol politicians all suck" responses in the comments are as inevitable as the sunrise, but can we maybe not pretend that storming Congress to interfere with the results of an election is just politics as usual?
