Yes. One thing about social security numbers that most people don't seem to know is that they're not anywhere close to being a secret. It's very easy to get almost anyone's SSN.
By the way, with a few exceptions centered around businesses that are required to report to the government, no business can legally demand your SSN. Most businesses that ask for it will assign a different ID number to you if you refuse to provide it. Some even tell you that on their forms.
In my opinion, the only way that nations can address this "problem" with even the slightest amount of legitimacy is to do what China is doing: firewall the internet off.
As bad as that is, it's far better, more fair, and more reasonable than asserting that you have the right to control what is being done everywhere on the planet.
It's worse than that. The court is saying that any original content that you might decide to put up on the internet should be subject to the laws of every nation on Earth simultaneously.
If we take the court seriously (which we should not do), this means that it is impossible to put anything but the most trivial content on the net.

"Remember when "conservative" generally meant "the designated driver" not "the authoritarian wingnut"?"
I certainly do. I miss the presence of reasonable people in politics generally, but the decline of conservatism in government specifically has been unusually spectacular.
Note to my conservative friends: just to be clear, I'm not saying there are no reasonable conservatives. There are plenty. They just seem to be absent in public office.
A million time this. Even if the Bad Thing is not the intent of the law, in pretty much every case I've seen of badly written laws that allow for Bad Things, two things have happened:
1. Lawmakers and law enforcement agencies claim that even though the Bad Thing is technically possible, obviously it would never be used that way.
"I'd say the answer is "nobody". Then under which legal theory did she get her supposed ownership of the Sun?"
This is actually very easy to answer. Since she's (presumably) not a signatory on any international agreements then this would be settled the same was it has always been settled: whoever can hold the land against invaders "owns" it.
There is no ultimate authority granting "ownership" of land.
the hearings claim to be aimed at ensuring the FCC is operating transparently and within the confines of its authority
Since the house is so concerned that powerful agencies operate transparently and within the confines of their authority, I'm looking forward to seeing a similar level of effort directed toward the NSA, FBI, DEA, etc.
I wasn't talking about the cost of PR. Companies that determine the correct amount of security based on a PR cost/benefit analysis are companies that should be avoided no matter how much security that ends up being. Of course, it's not always clear when they're doing this.
What are you ashamed of me about? Where did my critical thinking skills disappoint you?
I thought it was fairly obvious that I was talking about cell phones, which gives the answer to your three considerations: zero shielding, zero distance, and having it against your body for most of the day.
The reason that I wouldn't worry is because I've seen no evidence that convinces me that I should.

The first three digits indicated the geographical area, the second two are a group number, and the last four are a serial number.
By the way, there's a handy SSN decoder here: http://stevemorse.org/ssn/ssn.html
