I could be wrong, but my understanding is that ignoring a DMCA request would endanger your safe harbor protections. That is why we're always reading stories here about false DMCA filings. It is much safer for hosting companies to take things down and not take a chance.
I used to have a great deal of trust and faith in the police. However; that is eroding every year and a lot of the people I know are having the same problem. 56% is not well over half and I would argue for an organization that is suppose to help and protect the citizens that is a dismally low number. Also could you provide a link to the historical data you say proves your point?
Finally are you saying the police DO NOT have to earn the public's trust and respect?
This attitude is becoming more and more common. Which is why the police need to take off the blinders and realize the public's trust and respect has to be earned. Acting like thugs and protecting the minority who behave badly only tars them all with the same brush.
Unfortunately its nothing new. When Ragtime was the rage people got the vapors because it was going to lead to moral decay. I'm sure there are many, many more examples older than that.
Police work is hard, gathering evidence and thinking and all. All the police want to do is outsource this to the general public. This is how "Murder, She Wrote" worked. The police would proclaim one of Jessica Fletcher's friends guilty of the murder and she would find the rest of the show finding who did it. Not only did she always find the guilty party, but it only took a hour.
If a company is giving the silent treatment do the following, contact them and tell them the story will run on x date. Also let them know that if they do not respond the story will lead with a statement about how they were contacted for comment and choose not to respond. Then let the reader draw their own conclusion from the silence.
The Constitution was set up as a series of checks and balances between the three branches of government to prevent abuses of power. For any branch to usurp a power granted to another branch is a violation.
"... you can't excuse your bad behavior by playing weasel word games."
BAD BEHAVIOR, BAD BEHAVIOR! You're accusing the majority of bad behavior in defense of industries that lie, cheat, and steal as if it was their god given right? They do not OWN our common culture and it's well past time they realized it. I shutter to think of where (or even if we would have one) our cultural heritage would be today if these thieves (yes, I'm calling the media industries thieves) had been around when cave painting were invented.
