the MPAA's bizarre "blame the messenger [...]" treatment.
That's very hypocritical of you Mike. The movie studios are clueless fools who live in never-never-piracy-land. The MPAA is just the messenger. Stop shooting the messenger.
You know, I don't like the real names policy at all. However, I am really glad that those violent bigots have outed themselves that way. I am sure that their posts were duly noted by reputation services and that they will now find themselves having a hard time job hunting.
You have to listen to the original clip. One of the Fox News hosts actually said:
"I guess this is what happens when you don't believe in god. You have all this extra time 'cause you're not praying. You use it for unproductive things like suing about this."
I must admit that I had never realized that not praying gave me extra time. I had also never realized that I was wasting that time. I will pronto start putting that time to good use. I am looking forward to the day when the atheists have become more productive than the religious people and we can crush them under our boots of non-believing.... or something...
Later one of the hosts said something about how:
"We all have to be libertarian about this."
What the hell is libertarian about erecting a religious symbol on taxpayer dollars?
I must say that the most scary part is the comments right next to the smiling pictures. You see that and you start to ask yourself: These people look normal. Yet, they are a bunch of lunatics who seem to be willing to wage religious war. Who else is a lunatic masquerading as a normal person?
PS: I'm pretty sure there are laws against issuing death threat. And I'm pretty sure the people who said: "KILL THEM" or "someone show me where they live&and they will live no mere!" I might go buy myself a gun so I can defend myself against the crazy zombie worshippers.
Let's talk reasonably to these people. Maybe we can have a positive conversation with them and maybe they will change their mind... Wait no. I forgot the CoC doesn't like people talking with their puppets.
So let's change the tone a bit: The people in that video are supporting theft. They are supporting theft of domain names, censorship and spying on productive businesses. And in addition, they are doing that with lies. They are deserving of nothing but scorn and disgust.
Oh and I read the article. The debt collector who carries a supersoaker filled with acid is a sick bastard not to mention an idiot. Who will look the fool when his acid-gun leaks all over his hands?
Argh! Apparently this article is the one under which I break! This is stupid! In the US, I am allowed to carry a real gun! You know, the one kind that projects small metallic objects at supersonic speeds hundreds of meters away and can kill people! Who is the idiot who thought that supersoakers filled with acid would be more of a threat than guns?!?!?!?!
I am not much for class warfare. I think it's one of mankind's most stupid inventions. However, the UK seems to disagree. What happens if rich people who have their own housing are convicted? You'll ban them from shoddy government provided housing? I'm sure that will teach them a useful lesson!
"It's one of the reasons flash mobs are so dangerous, too many people in a place that isn't set up to handle it, without security."
Oh god. Let's get this one out of the way: "Those who would give up some liberty to gain some security deserve neither and will lose both." (Some guy possibly Benjamin Franklin) Since when is the "free world" the "free world but only if you have a permit"? We need to stop this absurd interference into people's lives. Life is and will always be risky. So let's just accept that stop trying to remove the risk and get on with our lives shooting water guns at each other whether the cops want us to or not!
Re: But copyright should have TOTALLY expired by 35 years!
I'm going to side with the artist here mostly because if the artists win, we can hope and possibly see a great battle between artists and the labels which might kill or at least weaken the labels.
or let the service be closed temporarily "so that fellow citizens like shopkeepers need not be assaulted, have their property and premises pilfered and trashed, and so that they need not live in fear."
I actually laughed at that. It is so ridiculously over the top and stupid that I have a hard time believing anyone would mean that question seriously. Let's ask another question: Should Mr. Crovitz be allowed to continue his absurd writing or should we throw him in shark-infested waters so that fellow citizens may be allowed to live without the specter of censorship and totalitarianism.
Well that was different. I mean, the Huffington Post is obviously exploitative because those writers would have never written those articles for no money. I mean, nobody ever writes anything without getting paid oodles of money. That's why I comment on TechDirt, Mike told me my check is in the mail.
There are many things that we want, make us angry or sad or whatever in life. Most of us are capable of dealing with those emotions without lashing out in extreme ways. Not so with the copyright maximalists. Instead of responding to the copying like civilized human beings, they call file sharing theft and ask their friends in Washington to go and throw the file sharer in jail. They are a bit like small children who throw a tantrum because they want a toy that someone has.
Well, Moore is not actually an advocate of free speech. He is an advocate of particular policies and wants to support them at all costs. If that means having to dump the 1st Amendment, I don't think he would care either way.
It seems to me S&P's decision to downgrade was largely because of political factors. It is true that if the politicians keep playing chicken over the debt ceiling, there could be a time when neither will swerve in time and they run off the cliff. It is unlikely (if anything because the game is not really chicken and they have plenty of options even if the debt ceiling isn't raised) but it can happen as is reflected in the very good AA+ rating the US has.
I think it doesn't make much sense to keep bringing up the whole mortgage debacle. Yes it was bad, but the situation is totally different. The ratings were issued by different departments and different people. The ratings in the mortgage crisis supposedly understated the risk of default while here S&P is accused of overstating the risk of default. The debt issuers paid S&P for the ratings which led to all sorts of conflicts of interest and shenanigans where the issuers would restructure deals with S&P's help to get AAA while here, I don't think S&P worked with the US government to let it restructure their debt to get a downgrade. Overall, I don't think the two are linked.
I think that's a fair assessment. The only addition I would have is that when they get caught, the bad ones should be thrown into a tank filled with sharks. Maybe I'm going overboard, but 45 days of suspension for beating someone blind is absurd. That is not a cop. That's a dangerous criminal and he deserves harsh punishment.
So what you are saying is that we should feel somewhat reassured that this violent criminal will still be on the streets carrying a gun and with significant authority but he will never be promoted? That's not enough.
Wait what? 45 days suspension for that? How about 45 years in jail instead? Instances of rights violations by police officers or other public officials should be met with unyielding severity. As a general rule, I oppose the death penalty. But I'm willing to make an exception for public officials who abuse their power and violate individual rights and freedoms. If you are a public official and you hurt someone in such a clear way, a public execution would be the best response.
I think this is fair. I mean, journalists are just like other artists. They make stuff up and then want other people to pay them for it. I don't see why they should be treated differently...
