We wouldn't treat machinery the way we treat broken people.
I dunno, rich motherfuckers like Bezos probably think of both groups in the exact same way: disposable and replaceable tools meant only to facilitate the expansion of his obscene wealth.
the more these companies tend to fight back against the efforts with sleazy and misleading claims and ad campaigns, the more the public tends to become aware of (and ultimately support) these initiatives
“The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers.”
Technically, he’s right: Social media platforms have been criticized for “politically correct” moderation.
But he’s also leaving out the details of what speech is being moderated, who’s publishing that speech, how no service—including Parler, GETTR, and all the other “Worst People Problem” right-wing circlejerks—is obligated by law to carry anyone’s speech, and how the critics of the moderation he’s whining about (including himself) are almost always confusing “we don’t do that here” with “you can’t do that anywhere” (and doing so intentionally).
This will never happen. Bots can’t understand context because contexts can change based on a number of variables. They’re good for broad-based “sledgehammer” moderation efforts, but they’ll never be able to handle the kind of narrower “scalpel” moderation that requires looking at context.
having a system that operates this poorly means you have a system that never should have been in production to begin with
And yet, if they axe this system, you better believe copyright maximalists will cry foul and say Google is trying to let piracy run rampant. It’s a can’t-win situation for Google—one that, due to its own general disinterest in properly standing up for users against false copyright/DMCA claims, it has only made worse for itself over the years.
the reason that TRUTH Social can work with Hive and make these decisions about how to moderate their platform in a "family friendly" manner is because of Section 230 giving them the freedom to do so without liability
I must once again remind people that preserving “family friendly” spaces was, in fact, one of the primary goals of enacting 47 U.S.C. § 230 into law, per the on-the-Congressional-record testimony of Republican lawmaker and 230 co-author Chris Cox.
are they really going to want to spend time as an avatar moving through the same thing gussied up into a virtual world?
From what I’ve seen of that virtual world, existing programs such as Second Life and VR Chat (as well as MMORPGs such as Final Fantasy XIV) can already do most of what the Metaverse does—and they can all do it better.
this is pretty much exactly what journalists do normally
Sorry, when was the last time that you heard about CNN openly asking its entire viewership for salacious information about public figures with a desperate plea spoken during a major primetime broadcast?
It wouldn't surprise me if soliciting that sort of information for the express purpose of trying to destroy someone's reputation runs afoul of some law
Seems more like extortion than blackmail to me, but what do I know—my law knowledge mainly comes from Jack McCoy. 😄
why don't they throw all their eggs into direct streaming and encourage people to dump traditional media distribution entirely?
Because that wouldn’t give them the certainty of both a lucrative (enough) contract with a major media operation like DirecTV and the potential reach of said conglomerate’s satellite TV offering. From what I understand, the DirecTV deal was the primary tentpole of the OANN circus—and since that deal will be breaking down soon, OANN may soon lack the funding necessary to stay on the air.
I believe they could find more than a few people willing to pay for an OANN subscription. But I don’t believe they could find enough to keep the network running on their own. OANN higher-ups know the end of the DirecTV deal is likely the end of OANN—and they’re doing this extortionist bullshit to at least delay the inevitable.
you end up fostering a new feudal class where the flows of wealth and assets in a nation gradually end up concentrated to a small percentage of neo-feudal hereditary nobility
You mean something like 1% of people in a country owning more wealth than all of the remaining 99% combined?
it takes a certain type of stupidity to say "I will publicly announce my intention to commit crimes in order to reverse a decision"
Even Trump’s various cronies didn’t talk publicly about their unethical, immoral, and (probably) illegal plans to stop the election certification and strike down American democracy. OANN is, as an entity, provably dumber than literal seditionist traitors.

Who has been censored, how were they censored, what speech were they censored for, and how are they fighting to regain their First Amendment rights?
Be very fucking specific.
