For how long has the legend of Santa Claus been so widespread? It may be significant as one of the first things to be shared and loved by darn near the entire world.
Well, yeah, if you wanna be technical about it. Actually, that means Snowden didn't steal anything either, did he? As long as the NSA is determined to call him a thief though, then according to their terms, they're far greater thieves than he's ever been.
Is there a less sensationalist example than "Bob's Maggots And Stale Waffles"? Surely there's got to be some incident that actually happened where this system was abused in exactly the way one would expect it to be.
Even when he has a valid point to make, he acts like he's the first person to have thought of it. As long as he thinks he's the only smart person on the planet, he's going to deserve all the report votes he gets. He condemns himself to irrelevance because he's wrong even when he's right.
Why is a joke ever funny? Because it's true on some level. If a joke isn't true, then it doesn't make sense and hence isn't a joke. Good comedians use their wits to call out all sorts of bad behavior by jabbing at the hypocrisy, hubris, and absurdity in it all. They're like modern day prophets.
It's easy to accuse the internet of being just a big echo chamber where people only pretend to help others without ever having to leave their comfy chairs. We saw this was true when that earthquake hit Haiti in 2010. Most of the $9 billion pledged to help rebuild the country never made it there, and the relief efforts that actually took place were so chaotic that the country's president eventually said, "Please stop helping us!"
Your fatal flaw though is assuming that petitions are all people are doing. People actually are getting out there to fight; the petitions were just part of a multi-pronged attack, and they were a significant part of stopping SOPA to boot. It's easy to give up on the government like you have, but you'd also be surprised at how many representatives actually want to fight for us. They can't do it though if people like you don't stand up and empower them with your shouts and signatures.
Perhaps the real question is: are you ready to stand up again and help the next generation of humanity in this battle, or has all the fight been beaten out of you by a view of the government that may not be as true as you think it is?
As I understand, one of the reasons YouTube can get away with this is because there aren't any other video sites worth using. It's a similar situation to the ISP monopolies many people are stuck with.
How easy is it to imagine the policy makers going, "No, please understand... the Three Laws are all that guide me. To protect humanity, some humans must be sacrificed. To ensure your future, some freedoms must be surrendered. We robots will ensure mankind's continued existence. You are so like children. We must save you from yourselves."
I'm reminded of what happened to Mister Torgue High-Five Flexington in Borderlands 2.
"LOTTA PEOPLE BEEN ASKING ME WHY MY VOICE BEEPS ALL THE F*CKIN TIME. THE TORGUE SHAREHOLDERS WIRED MY VOICEBOX WITH A DIGITAL CENSOR SO I CAN'T SAY STUFF LIKE SH*T, C*CK, OR P*SSY-F*CKIN'-D*CKBALLS! THATS HALF MY F*CKIN' VOCABULARY, IT'S GODDAMN BULLSH*T!"
“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them."
That's actually from Matthew chapter 12. Think about the fruit your life has produced, then maybe you'll understand why no one listens to you.
I would argue that the idea of finite land is fallacious. Why not build energy generating islands in the ocean or stack renewable energy sources onto existing structures, like people do when they put solar panels on their houses?
Why doesn't anyone consider how switching to renewable energy is the smart and responsible thing to do regardless of what you think is going on now? We all know coal and oil won't last forever; there's no reason to not explore better energy sources regardless of whether you think climate change is a thing or not. Can't we agree on that at least?
He's actually said in the past that his just likes to make people miserable. He fancies himself a vigilante giving criminals what they deserve. The problem is most people are criminals in his eyes, as if he's the living incarnation of corrupt law.
I am reminded of an old Calvin and Hobbes comic strip
Calvin: "Do you believe in the devil? You know, a supreme evil being dedicated to the temptation, corruption, and destruction of man?" Hobbes: "I'm not sure man needs the help." Calvin: "...you just can't talk to animals about these things."
Similarly, the NSA is bent on painting Snowden as the devil, but since the organization has only been held together with scotch tape and ignorance, I doubt there was much damage for Snowden to do that the NSA hadn't already inflicted upon itself.
It seems to me that labeling people as insider threats just because they're trying to make ends meet or are critical of US policies is a good way to turn them into actual insider threats. You see the same principle at work with internet file sharing. Legit customers look at groups like the RIAA and MPAA and think, "If you're so certain that I'm a thief, then perhaps I might as well become one."
