The examples cited concern (from the a creativity context) fairly staid options like choice of producer and album song count. Were the band in the clutches of Big Music they'd have no real input into these decisions either. The key advantage to crowdsourcing is the fanbase decisions are based on what they want to hear, as opposed to what would move the most units.
Toss a coin on which is the best path to follow. Either one is a compromise away from creative purity, but at least they're not putting the chord progressions up to a web poll, or accreting the lyrics from their Tweet stream.
...which is stuff I've actually done. Crowbarring that kinda non-Euclidean hivemuse input into a coherent form is actually a good creative workout.
You honestly believe that the commons requires the wise and benevolent shepherding of Big Music to guide us towards quality music and protect us from the unapproved and tonally challenged?
Nor is a grammatically incorrect paraphrase. A more effective rejoinder would have been to cite your years of hands-on experience as a musician striving to perfect your craft.
"There will be exceptional cases of actual good music made by talented people, but it gets lost in the crud, in the noise, in the endless see of junk"
How is this in any way different from the past and/or present?
...and you spelled 'sea' wrong.
"That right there is one of the future music stars of the new era. Amazing, isn't it?"
No, that's an unskilled high school band. There's never been a lack of them, and every big name, famous, RIAA approved musician you can think of played in one exactly like it when they were in high school.
"A low percentage of people are actually musically talented, and an even lower number actually has the skill and the talent to write new music. The high percentages are people will less musical talent, and who have little skill to write songs but will do it anyway. Those are the people who dominate an egalitarian commons. "
Again, how is this in any way different from past/present, other than the fact that Big Music won't be operating the middleman tollbooth?
This man knows nothing of the current state of the recording arts. Anyone with a reasonably configured PC has access to more opportunity for experimental audio recording than George Martin could have imagined in his wildest dreams, with no generation loss, no rewind, and no splicing blocks.
Gibson has a long and storied history of litigous behavior going back to the Norlin years and the EBay staple 'Lawsuit Ibanez' guitars. They took a shot at Activision (and a slew of retail giants) a few years ago over the entire Guitar Hero concept and lost resoundingly.
If 'the experience' the content creator wants you to have includes enabling you to freely distribute said content then yes, the Netflix DRM does in fact affect the experience.
The DRM is in this case infringing on the right of the creator to determine who does what with their content.
Two words: Fan licenses. Call it 'Pay to Yay!' or something. It'll be a new standard in audience monetization. Hire the guys who do the Windows licensing structures to work out the nation/event fee grids.
