Re: Reworking strong memory pieces pulled in by senses
the brain activity during sleep makes me wonder sometimes if artificial intelligence projects need to look into simulating sleep when developing artificial neural networks.... I'll have to search around a bit to see if any other animals have an REM stage of sleep..? I would be interesting if REM sleep was present in parrots/dolphins/chimps/etc...
I wonder if anyone is tracking the "average intelligence" of the human population... it's quite possible that the median intelligence is trending downwards.
Malcolm Gladwell wrote a book (Outliers) that popularized the idea that if you practice something for at least 10,000 hours -- you'll achieve some degree of mastery in that activity.
yes, DARPA may have inadvertently made it much more difficult to gather intelligence by letting the entire world know that shredders are useless for destroying sensitive information (if someone really wants to reconstruct the chads).
But if DARPA has any old shredded documents lying around that might be important.. all that evidence will probably be looked at again to see if they contain any more info.
If the McRib gets really popular, I fully expect there to be frozen McRib knockoffs in supermarkets taking up entire rows of shelves -- just like there are chicken nugget knockoffs everywhere...
"Pork nuggets" doesn't sound very appetizing... but I'm sure there will be a beef version, too. yum!
It's definitely because we're not smart enough... maybe someday we'll figure it out, but then there will be something even more complicated to figure out and we'll have to get smarter to understand ever more complicated stuff...
hmm. getting inanimate objects to the moon shouldn't be as hard as getting people back to the moon... so remote-controlled mining equipment shouldn't be as hard as you make it sound?
Police agencies want drones for air support to find runaway criminals. Utility companies expect they can help monitor oil, gas and water pipelines. Farmers believe drones could aid in spraying crops with pesticides.
"It's going to happen," said Dan Elwell, vice president of civil aviation at the Aerospace Industries Association. "Now it's about figuring out how to safely assimilate the technology into national airspace."
Robots that figure out how to control bees... are actually kind of scary -- if these robobees get hacked and start telling bees not to pollinate important crops, etc...

These DailyDirts aren't supposed to be comprehensive... but I did mention dolphin communication in this one:

If you've got any more examples of cool animal communication techniques, I'd love to see 'em.
Thanks!
Mike

It looks like naturally-bred broccoli could get patent protection, even though the rules aren't supposed to allow for that.
