What if you're singer/songwriter trying out a new song to an audience and someone yells out, "The song is great, but cut out the guitar solo." So you record it without the guitar solo.
Does that mean that the random guy should get partial copyright credit for the song?
Think about it from their perspective. The government installs a nice fence with a nice gate and enacts a law that only one label/corporation/entity gets to collect money from people who want to go through the gate.
Well, the label/corporation/entity decides it can make more money by opening more gates. So laws are passed giving exclusive rights to those new gates.
Then it gets the idea that it can get even more money by keeping some gates open and some gates closed, depending on the dates and locations, and charging different entrance fees for each gate.
So when people get tired of waiting at one of the gates and decide to hop the fence, how is that the label/corporation/entity's fault?
The bigger question than why local reporters were reading the same story, is why this Conan story was being aired on local news in the first place?
Local news outlets should be reporting on local news. That should be their sole focus. If they're reporting on stuff the entire world has already read about online, they're failing miserably.
The issue discussed by those cases is not whether pornography can be covered by copyright, but whether illegal pornography can be covered by copyright.
The code word is "obscene." Pornography is legal. Obscene pornography is not. Obscene is a legal term of art, not a mere description or a genre.
There's a real simple solution for this. You pay the taxes of the state from which your order shipped. So if I buy from Newegg and it ships from New Jersey. I pay New Jersey's state tax.
This makes sense. If I drive to New Jersey and buy something, I have to pay the state tax.
If I have a friend go to New Jersey and buy something for me, I have to pay the state tax.
And if I pay someone to go to New Jersey and buy something for me, I have to pay the state tax.
But yet when I pay Fedex or UPS to pick it up and ship it for me, I don't have to pay New Jersey's tax. How does that make any sense?!
States hate this idea because it would lead to states competing against themselves for shipping centers. Texas, for example, could offer low out of state shipping taxes for Amazon's promise to build a new shipping center. Governments hate competition.
No to mention that not every state is capable of becoming a shipping mecca.
Back in 2007 an asian actress by the name of Eriko Tamura (real name Eriko Sakamoto) sued the IMDB under similar circumstances, but later dropped the lawsuit. Is this the same not very famous asian chick who also americanized her name?!
Years ago, back in the late 80s or early 90s I worked at a PBS affiliate and there was some show, I believe it was Frontline, which devoted a program to anorexia.
Most people think that anorexia is caused by young girls trying to emulate fashion models. However, there is no evidence to support that. In fact, the interesting thing about anorexia is that the rates of teenage girls suffering from it remains static across various cultures and countries.
So the rates of anorexia are the same for cultures that find thinness attractive and for cultures that find heaviness/chunkiness attractive.
In other words, there is no evidence that cultures that praise thinness causes anorexia.

We don't call it bribery anymore. We now call it donating to an election or reelection fund.
